Overview:

CareerSource Brevard (CSB) is committed to building an effective, sustainable Manufacturing Sector Strategy for Brevard by working directly with the manufacturing community to hear their voices, address the critical workforce challenges they face, map resources, and take priority steps to fill current needs and ensure a robust talent pipeline into the future.

Work is being done in collaboration with the EFSC Manufacturing Advisory Council, andmanufacturers, educational and training partners,economic developers at county and municipality levels, community leaders, elected officials andworkforce development experts to define skills gaps,identify and redesign training and education and initiatives needed to bridge the current and future manufacturing skills gaps in Brevard County.

This report summarizes the EFSC/AIM Sector Strategy meeting held on May 4, 2016, where CSB played host to more than 40 manufacturers, economic developers, education and training providers, workforce professionals and community leaders.

The purpose of the meeting was two-fold: Share the initiatives and progress made in the past six months as identified and achieved by the manufacturers and community members working on the AIM committees. Provide updates on the benefits of several CSB business services such as On the Job Training andPROVE It! skills assessment software.

An Education Panel comprised of Janice Scholtz, Technical Education Director, Brevard Public Schools,Frank Margiotta, Dean of Workforce Programs, EFSC and Patty Boatman, Workforce Program Coordinator, EFSC,shared program successes and outcomes directly related to the Advanced Manufacturing Sector Strategy work.

EFSC EDUCATION UPDATES: Prof Meer Almeer:

  • Adding Industrial Management Degree:60 Credit Hours. Courses available online starting in August. Course will be offered at Palm Bay and Cocoa campuses.
  • New Aircraft Maintenance Technician program offered only on the EFSC Aviation Facility- 20 month program. Students will receive their A & P (Airframe & Powerplant) license for the Aviation Industry. This program follows strict FAA guidelines
  • Need Industry comments on Standards and Benchmarks Review of the “Engineering Technology Support Specialist” curriculum. Documents have been sent to Council members. Response requested by May 11.

ON THE JOB TRAINING FUNDS- Are you taking advantage of these grant funds to offset the cost of onboarding a new hire? Why this program is important and what’s in it for you as an employer:

  • Average cost savings to an employer over $5000 but up to $9500 per eligible employee
  • Excellent opportunity to help offset the cost of hiring someone new.
  • Every business has some form of training for new employees
  • Reimbursement on average takes 15 days – can be monthly or at the end of the training

PROVE IT SKILLS ASSESSMENT TOOL:

  • Free Skills Assessment Software is available for all registered employers in Employ Florida.
  • Over 1000 assessment tests and 75+ assessments specifically geared towards manufacturing skills prior to interviewing a candidate. Click here to review the tests offered as a recruiting tool by CareerSource Brevard.

Subcommittee Reports: Additional volunteers are needed for the Industry Advisory Committees for next round of occupation skills and training review for Quality Assurance Inspection, CAD and CAM Designers and Soldering.

  • Education Mapping and Training:Eastern Florida State Collegerepresentativesmet with threeCareer Pathways subcommittees comprised of local manufacturervolunteers from three identified critical occupationsto review curriculum and competency testing for CNC Machine Operators, Welders and Quality Assuranceand Inspection. Committee recommendations have been given to EFSC for consideration and possible curriculum changes starting in fall 2016.
  • Youth Summer Internships: Three manufacturing companies (Mainstream Engineering, Merritt Island Boatworks and Knight’s Armament) are participating in the inaugural launch of the Internship program offering seven (7) intern job offerings. The Interns will start on June 6.
  • Community Unifying Initiatives: The Subcommittee is exploring the concept of a Workforce Skills Training Fund with the municipalities,agencies and manufacturers interested in creating a fund to be used when all other funding resources have been exhausted.Quarterly meetings will be scheduled with the municipalities to increase communication and information sharing on economic development and training initiatives that supportthe manufacturing community kills gap.

RESULTS:

  • 7 Summer Internship Positions are available for the summer to introduce young adults to manufacturing careers.
  • 6 out of 7 CNC Machinist Accelerated Trainingprogram graduates are employed as of May1. Next class starting in August.
  • Welding Advisory Committee curriculum recommendations submitted to EFSC
  • Machinist Advisory Committee curriculum recommendations submitted to EFSC
  • Ad Hoc Manufacturing Accounting Committee reviewed accounting curriculums to make them more relevant to manufacturing. Recommendations were shared with Brevard Public Schools and EFSC.

Brevard Public Schools Update:

  • $500,000 grant was awarded for the Aerospace (Eau Gallie) and Manufacturing Academies (Bayside)
  • New teacher has been hired for the Advanced Manufacturing Academy at Bayside

Eastern Florida State College Update:

  • EFSC received $530,000 to renovate the Advance Machining Shop. Renovations will begin this summer
  • UTech-Mazak is interested and in negotiations with EFSC to make the Cocoa machining shop a Regional Sales and Training Center
  • Plan to lease relevant state of the art equipment at a low cost and flexibility to rotateequipment as needed vs. purchase.
  • Adding Industrial Management Degree- starting in Fall, 2016

EFSC Corporate Training Services Update:

  • Custom Training available for companies or small groups
  • 83 Softskills and certifications available: Supervisory Development, Conflict Resolution, IPC certifications
