  2. VERY IMPORTANT: Students will need to perform all of their Academy course work on a computer with high speed access to the Internetwhich is NOT located behind a government, banking, brokerage house or other business office firewall. These firewalls usually prevent students from accessing the secured area of the Academy web site where all course work is posted. Ten years of DLA graduates can confirm that there is no work around on this item. In addition, several of the courses require taking online tutorials that can only be accessed with a high speed connection. Students without high speed access or who are behind these types of firewalls will need to find alternative Internet access such as home or the public library or should not enroll in the Academy until they have regular unobstructed high speed Internet access.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL TABLET USERS

During the 2012-2013 Leadership Academy year, many students inquired as to whether or not they would be able to use their iPad or other tablet for the DLA program. Because of the number of inquiries we thoroughly tested the following:

  1. iPad / Suitable
  2. Samsung Galaxy Tab II / Suitable (as this resulted in a successful testing, it can be “assumed” that all upper end Android tablets with the latest Android operating systems will perform in the same manner as the Samsung Galaxy TAB II as long as they meet the following requirements).
  3. Microsoft Surface / Suitable
  4. Nook and Kindle / Not suitable

Requirements for Using Tablets for the DLA

  1. Keyboard:

First, you cannot complete Academy work by typing on the screen of your tablet. There is a lot of typing for each course and in order to complete the courses in a timely manner, you will need to invest in a keyboard that is compatible with your tablet. Having tested several, we have the following suggestions to consider:

  1. Bluetooth only. This is the most convenient and works very, very well. You can also find some that have a micro USB plug, however, most of the tablets cannot accommodate this.
  2. Logitech: For the iPad, this company makes a variety of Bluetooth keyboards. One of the most popular is the Ultrathin that is also a “smart” cover and it now comes in both Black and white. Since the iPad does not come with a cover/case, this is the answer. Sleek, great key touch, and the smart cover is a bonus. If you live near a Costco, they sell them for $30 less than the major retail outlets.
  3. Android: There are a multitude of keyboards available for Androids that fit various Android tablets. Check a supplier such as Amazon by the brand name of your tablet and make your choice from there. You’ll find many options and more than likely one of them will be just what you’re looking form.
  4. Check Amazon: Amazon has dozens of tablet keyboards, many of which can double as a case of the tablet. Just be sure that you choose the right styles. Don’t pick one that uses a “tab-snap” closure so that when you open it, there will be the leather tab sticking up from the front of the keyboard. Don’t pick one of the “flat surface” tablets. It’s guaranteed that you probably won’t like it. Make sure that you get one with actual touch keys not just pressure surface keys.
  1. Applications:
  2. BOX.COM Both the iTunes Store and the Android Play Store have a free application for Box.Com. You can install it on ALL of your iDevices as well as all of your Android devices. Once installed, just log into the DLA Box.Com account and you’re set to go. This app works great for reading / reviewing on the go. In fact it’s better than viewing on your computer screen.
  1. OnLive Desktop (Microsoft): This is an incredible program that is available as an APP for both your iPad on iTunes and for all Androids from the PlayStore. For all of the details go to the web site and check it out: The application includes the following:
  2. Program opens to a familiar “Windows Desktop”
  3. Access to an online version of Microsoft Office 2010 to use on your tablet (Word, Excel, PPT)
  4. 2GB of storage space for your files
  5. Integrated Microsoft Explorer Browser with access to:
  6. BOX.Com
  7. Gmail
  8. Dropbox
  9. A “subscription” will only cost your $4.95/month during the time you are doing your Academy work and you’ll be able to use your tablet along with your Gmail to complete all of your DLA work. Well worth the investment

(NOTE: If you choose to use a tablet for your DLA work, technical support will not be available from the Academy. You can learn the necessary techniques” for copying and pasting, deleting, inserting, etc. for your particular device using available references and books.)
