AHOUSE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF CHARLES SHORT OF YORK COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Charles Short of York County on December23, 2012, at the venerable age of eightysix; and
Whereas, in1944, a young Charlie Short enlisted in the U.S. Navy for service in World War II and completed his basic training at the JacksonvilleNaval Air Station in Florida. He then was briefly assigned to Naval Air Station at Vero Beach, where he received training as a plane captain on the F4F Wildcats, the F6F Hellcats, and the SB2A Buccaneers. Serving as a plane captain, he spent the duration of the war at the Guiuan Air Base on the Philippine island of Samar and was honorably discharged in June 1946; and
Whereas, Charlie Short’s career as an ironworker spanned decades and took him from the Northwest Territory, where he helped construct the U.S. earlywarning system on the Dew Line, to New York, where he worked on projects such as the VerrazanoNarrows Bridge and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. In the 1970s, he spent a year in Saudi Arabia building communication towers for the royal families; and
Whereas, closer to home, he helped construct local landmarks, such as South Park Mall, the Charlotte Observer Building, and many of the skyscrapers in Uptown Charlotte; and
Whereas, he was a member of First Baptist Church andpast commander of Eli Bailes Post #43, American Legion, where he was the longest consecutively serving member, having joined in 1946. In addition, he was officer of the year several times and served as sergeant of arms for more than twenty years. He was named sergeant of arms emeritus and remained an active member of the honor guard. Charlie Short also served as a member of the VFW, the Forty and Eight, Catawba Masonic Lodge #56, and the Shrine; and
Whereas, in December 1946, Charlie married his beloved Patricia Eileen Buchanan, God blessing the union with a daughter, Debbie, and a son, Mike, who gave their parents the joy of five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Charlie and Patricia had celebrated more than fiftythree happy years together by the time of her passing in 2000; and
Whereas, Charlie Short leaves to cherish his memory his children, grandchildren, and a host of friends. He will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Charles Short of York County and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mike Short for the family.
