AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR ST. JAMES HIGH SCHOOL OF HORRY COUNTY, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE STUDENTS, TEACHERS, PARENTS, AND ADMINISTRATORS FOR BEING NAMED A RECIPIENT OF THE NATIONAL OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOLS THAT WORK AWARD.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that St. James High School will be recognized at the 2011 High Schools That Work Summer Staff Development Conference to be held in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 20, 2011; and

Whereas, one of thirteen schools nationwide to receive the national Outstanding High Schools That Work award, St. James High School was selected to receive the award for improvements in areas such asan increase in graduation rate, significant improvement on state assessments, andthe percentage of students meeting college readiness standards as measured by the ACT and SAT;and

Whereas, High Schools That Work is an initiative of the Southern Regional Education Board and is the nation’s largest schoolimprovement initiative for highschool leaders and teachers; and

Whereas, more than twelve hundred high schools in thirty states and the District of Columbia currently use the framework of High Schools That Work Goals and Key Practices to raise student achievement and graduation rates; and

Whereas, in 2003, St. James opened with seven hundred students, which did not include a senior class, andtodaythe high school is home to over thirteen hundred students; and

Whereas, located in Murrells Inlet, St. James offers nineadvancedplacement classes along with a wide variety of honors classesand boasts eight computer labs and a media center with over fourteen thousand books; and

Whereas, in addition to academic excellence, the outstanding student athletes of St. James have also brought home state championships in the last five years in girls softball, wrestling, and baseball; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the standard of excellence that St. James High School has set for itself in its early years and expect to hear of many future accomplishments. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor St. James High School of Horry County, and congratulate the students, teachers, parents, and administrators for being named a recipient of the national Outstanding High Schools That Work award.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Principal Vann Pennell.
