Peers : 20%

Attendance

Please clarify which one of below is correct. I think you prefer the second one, judging from information below.

unexplained absence: -3per 1 hour of class

late/arrived after the presentation begins : -2per 1 hour of class

absence without supporting document/doctor’s notes: -1 per 1 hour of class

General Principle and Topic

  1. The goal of this course is to help students develop the following skills:

Comprehending and evaluating research reports

Organising presentation materials

Developing researchstrategies based on current accomplishment

Critical thinking

Asking questions and engaging in the discussion

Presentation practice

  1. Seminar topic for 2015Spring Term focuses on “Cell Biology and Disease”. The Cell Biology faculties of CBMB will sit-in for the class and discuss contemporary concepts of the selected topics with our students.
  2. A list of research articles is prepared by the Cell Biology faculties of CBMB. Each student will discuss with his/her coach professor to select an article from the list for presentation.
  3. The coach professor will guide the student on the preparation, including preparation of an introductory summary, presentation contents and skills, etc.
  4. The sit-in professor is the professor who suggested the article for presentation. In the case of unexpected absence of the sit-in professor, the coordinator will suggest another professor who may be familiar with the subject.
  5. The students will practice on formal presentation skills in class and will be graded onintroductory summary, slides, content organisation, time management (a total of 45 minutes), eye contact/body language/the use of laser pointer, slide organization, fluency and pronunciation.

Student Responsibilities

  1. Student will practice formal presentation skills on article he/she chose and approved by his/her coach professor in class. The fluency of presentation in terms of organization, time management (a total of 45 minutes), eye contact/ body language/ the use of laser pointer, slide organization, and pronunciation will be evaluated.
  2. Students are also required to moderate one presentation. Each presenter will be introduced by a moderator (served by presenter the following week). The performance of the moderator will be evaluated by Seminar Coordinator and count towards the final grade.
  3. Students should invite his/her coach professor to select an article for presentation and to attend his/her presentation. The presenting student should confirm his/her presentation time with both coach and sit-in professorsat the beginning of the spring semester, 2015. Please also remind professors to attend the course again 3 days before the scheduled presentation. Students should also notify programme secretary and course assistant simply by cc them in the email invitations. All CBMB professors are engaged in the student seminar and take turns to attend the class.

  1. Students should prepare a one-page introductory summary on the paper with a speech title on. The title does not need to be the same as the selected article. It is a must that a student draft the summary himself/herself (do not copy from the selected article).
  2. Students should send the chosen article and an introductory summary to Seminar Coordinator, Coach Professor, all participating students and programme secretary at least 7 days before the scheduled presentation. Sit-in professors will view and evaluate the summaryin class.
  3. Presenterswill prepare 20~30 slides with clear page numbers to present the article. The presentation should indicate clear background knowledge of the article with emphasis on the motivation, goal, and hypothesis of the work. All slides should have a title, sufficient information and a concluding sentence. All figure and tables should be clearly labelled. Presenters should presentall results from the paper supporting or challenging the hypothesis. In the end, use 2-3 slides to discuss the conclusions, impact, and future applications of the work. All information inthe slides should be explained clearly within 45 minutes.
  4. Participating students are expected to ask questions and/or provide comments on the paper. There are about 15 minutes for open discussion.
  5. Participating students will grade the presenters (20% of the overall final score). Students whofail to hand in the peer scoring sheet will be considered as absence.
  6. Students who must be absent from the class have to inform Seminar Coordinator, programme secretary and course assistant regarding the absence and provide necessary proof to be officially excused from the class.

The Responsibilities of the Coach Professor(20% of the overall final score)

  1. Assist studentsto preparethe introductory summary.
  2. Review the student’s PowerPoint slides and instruct the student to rehearse in advance.
  3. Initiate discussion with the sit-in professor and students.
  4. Evaluate the seminar presentation.

The Responsibilities of the Sit-in Professor(30% of the overall final score)

  1. The sit-in professor will evaluate the scientific content of the presentation.Sit-in professor may ask the audience to address certain discussion points to make sure that students are paying attention to the presentation and making sense of the presentation.
  2. Evaluate the seminar presentation.

The Responsibilities of the Seminar Coordinator(25% of the overall final score)

  1. Explain the rules and requirements relating to the course in the first lesson.
  2. Help students who have difficulties in the course.
  3. Suggestions for further improvement for students and professors should go to the Seminar Coordinator.
  4. Evaluate the seminar presentation and performance of the moderator.

The Responsibility of the Moderator(5% of the overall final score)

  1. Introduce the name, background, and topic of the presenter.
  2. Monitor time for the presentation. Each presentation including Q&A is 50 minutes. Moderator should know how many slides the presenter prepares, and ring the bell 40 minutes after the speech start.
  3. Keep record of students’ attendances. The moderator should write down the names of the students who are absent or late.
  4. Manage Q&A session. Select students who want to ask questions and write down their names for additional points (0.5 point for each presentation). Give the list of names to CBMB office.
  5. Moderator has to give comments/suggestions about the presentation skills
