2009 Program Information
IPDET 2009 is designed to meet the professional development needs of senior and mid-level evaluation and audit professionals working in developed and developing country governments, bilateral and multilateral development agencies, or non-governmental organizations.Participants are welcome to attend any combination of weeks in the program: the Core Course only, either or both of the workshop weeks, or the entire four-week program. Some participants have enrolled in the Core Course one year and returned the following year to take workshops. Some who have taken one or two weeks of workshops return for additional workshops as part of their continuing professional development.
IPDET’s first two weeks, the Core Course, devote special attention to monitoring and evaluating the implementation of poverty reduction strategies and emphasize results-based management and stakeholder participation. The 2009 Core Course offers more than 80 instructional hours, complete with tools, case studies, discussion groups, and readings, based on modules developed by experienced World Bank staff. Approximately one-third of the Core Course is devoted to structured work group sessions, which give participants with similar subject matter interests the opportunity to work together on real-world evaluation issues and problems—the IPDET way of maximizing the opportunity for peer learning.
Many of last year’s highly successful workshops will be offered again this year. New this year are workshops on evaluating governance and applying the theory of change to environmental and sustainable development impact evaluation.
Guest Lecturers
The program will again invite an impressive array of guest lecturers, including the President of the Public Service Commission of Canada, Canada’s assistant auditor general, and the well-known author and evaluator Michael Q. Patton. Senior officials of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the International Development Research Centre will also contribute their expertise through guest lectures. We are pleased to collaborate again with the National Capital Chapter of the Canadian Evaluation Society (CES), whose members volunteer as expert panelists for the final day of presentations.IPDET Features

Make Connections With Colleagues From Around the World
Coordination and cooperation among development actors has never been as important as it is today. Scarce resources and the challenges of multidonor coordination call for joint action and the leveraging of knowledge and resources from all sectors. At IPDET, participants will make connections with evaluation colleagues from around the world. Professionals from multilateral and bilateral agencies, government officials from central ministries, and managers with nongovernmental organizations are some of the people with whom you will work and build long-term relationships based on common interests.Stay Connected Through the ListServ
More than 2000 professionals from over 125 countries have already benefited from the program. IPDET alumni are invited to join the IPDET Listserv, which has proven to be an effective means for the IPDET community to sustain and benefit from the professional connections and friendships that are a key part of the IPDET experience. Recent moderated discussions on the IPDET Listserv have included positioning evaluation within your organization, resources for evaluating the impact of regional institutions, and monitoring and evaluating policy and advocacy campaigns. Additionally, the IPDET Listserv provides a forum for announcing employment opportunities and upcoming training events.Who Should Attend?
IPDET is designed for development professionals who conduct or manage development evaluations, including those within development banks, bilateral agencies, nongovernmental organizations, private sector consulting firms specializing in development evaluations, officials in developing countries, and the World Bank Group. We strongly recommend that those new to development evaluation begin with the Core Course training.Work With World-Class Faculty
We have assembled a world-class faculty for this program, blending both extensive field experiences in all regions of the world with high-level methodological skills and knowledge. IPDET co-directors Linda Morra Imas and Ray C. Rist, both former World Bank Group evaluation specialists, teach the Core Course, together with CarletonUniversity adjunct professor Martin Abrams. The elective workshop faculty includes an array of international experts who have extensive experience in development evaluation (see the program curriculum for faculty biographies and workshop descriptions).Connect With Canada
We offer this program in Ottawa, Canada’s national capital. In addition to being a beautiful, comfortable, and multicultural city, Ottawa is home to many of the country’s major development institutions, including the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and a wide range of nongovernmental organizations, research institutes, and private companies engaged in development efforts around the world.Connect With Carleton University
Carleton University is a medium-sized, comprehensive university with major faculties in public affairs, the social sciences, the sciences, business, and engineering and architecture. The Faculty of Public Affairs groups together nine academic units, including Economics, International Affairs, Journalism, Political Economy, Public Policy and Administration, and Social Work. Living on Carleton’s beautiful campus and taking advantage of the university’s many services and events is both intellectually stimulating and personally revitalizing.Lomakkeen alareuna
