2009 Clinical Simulation Conference Summary

On June 3, 2009, at INTEGRISBaptistMedicalCenter in Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma Health Care Workforce Center hosted a part III best practices workshop entitled:

“Collaborating to Integrate Clinical Simulation in Educational &

Patient Care Settings”

______

Approximately 100 health care professionals from across the state attended this one day event focusing on:

  • Identifying multidisciplinary uses of clinical simulation;
  • Describing the use of clinical simulation in trauma and disaster preparedness activities;
  • Discussing the components of state-of-the art clinical simulation;
  • Identifying clinical occurrences that lend themselves to competency confirmation via clinical simulation; and
  • Integrating clinical simulation in educational and patient care settings.

After each presentation, participants were asked to complete evaluations. Responses were compiled and were as follows:

On a scale of 1-7 with 1 being low and 7 being high, respondents scored the conference overall a 6.63. Meeting facilities were also highly rated at 6.51.

Respondents indicated that keynote and listen and learn speakers were well-received as all sessions were rated between 6.02 and 6.88. The range for simulation demonstration speakers was 5.25-6.74. These sessions were ranked as follows by conference participants:

Themes

Program Strengths

  • Demonstrations and the opportunity to consider “how to” aspects;
  • Speaker and topic variety and quality;
  • Well organized with great networking opportunities, snacks and lunch; and
  • Nice facility.

Program Weaknesses

  • Would like to have had:
  • More time between sessions to network, get something to drink, etc;
  • A master/at-a-glance schedule so room assignments were more easily determined;
  • Less repetition from the speakers;
  • A session on debriefing;
  • More comfortable seating and room temperatures that were more comfortable; and
  • Meeting materials (PowerPoints) in a readable format and available sooner.

Most Significant Insights

  • Oklahoma needs a central simulation laboratory;
  • Simulation has multidisciplinary application;
  • Simulation needs to be better integrated into orientation and the curriculum so that classroom lectures are more interactive and focus on application of the theory/concept being taught;
  • Significant planning activities and financial investments are required for simulation to be successful;
  • Simulation is being innovatively used;
  • Others are facing similar challenges associated with establishing a simulation laboratory;
  • The introduction to simulation using the sim man, followed by the RRT scenario and then Dr. Pliego’s presentation was very helpful.

Program Improvements

  • More time to play/use simulators and focus on multidisciplinary applications;
  • Add debriefing and “how to set up” sessions; and
  • Make handouts/PowerPoints available online.

Topics for Future Workshops

  • Putting together the evidence to support investments in simulation;
  • Collaboration and funding sources;
  • Business Planning;
  • Debriefing;
  • Incivility in the Workplace;
  • Integrate students via video into the conference and use more video;
  • Simulation enriched curriculum design;
  • Application of PDAs/Smart Phones with simulation;
  • In-depth scenario writing and determination of mannequin to be used; and
  • Using simulation to connect theory to application.

Other Comments

  • Program was wonderfully blended;
  • The 3D breakout had the possibility of being a fantastic; presentation if computer problems had not intervened;
  • A compendium of resources would be nice;
  • Food served at the conference was very satisfying and a number of respondents expressed appreciation for it;
  • Liked the two room format;
  • The conference was a great place to network;
  • Would like to have seen more multidisciplinary representation among registrants; and
  • Announce the date for the next conference in September.
