AHOUSE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THECOASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY BASEBALL TEAMFOR ITS OUTSTANDING SEASON AND FOR CAPTURING THE 2010 BIG SOUTH TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE, AND TO HONOR THE TEAM’S EXCEPTIONAL PLAYERS, COACHES, AND STAFF.
Whereas, for the fourth consecutive year and the eighth time in the past ten years, the fully preparedCoastal Carolina University baseball team defeated all comers to grab the 2010Big South Tournament Championship title; and
Whereas, Head Coach Gary Gilmore, Assistant Head Coach Kevin Schnall, Assistant Coach Brendan Dougherty, Assistant Coach Drew Thomas, and Director of Baseball Operations Chris Carter, with grueling practices, hard work, and determination, built their baseball program into a championship team that continues to prove its topdrawer caliber; and
Whereas, finishing their regular Big South season with a school and Big Southrecord of 51winning games (which increased to 55 postseason) and a perfect 250, this Coastal Carolina team powered its way to a national seed for the first time in the program’s history, reaching number four in the national rankings; and
Whereas, adding even greater luster to a stellar season, the Chanticleers, who hit a schoolrecord 111 homeruns and stole 161bases, raked in numerous honors for individual players. Eight team members were named to the AllBig South First Team after the Chanticleers nailed their thirteenth Big South regularseason title in school history; and
Whereas, Anthony Meo was named Big South Pitcher of the Year, while Daniel Bowmanwas selected as the Big South Tournament’s Most Valuable Player; and
Whereas, Rico Noel took home the Myrtle Beach Regional Most Valuable Player award; and
Whereas, Anthony Meo was tapped for District IV Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association; and
Whereas, Austin Fleet was named the ESPN The Magazine Academic AllAmerica First Team, the first in the Big South since 1995; and
Whereas, finally, catcher Jose Iglesias was named a finalist for the prestigious Johnny Bench Award, which is presented to the nation’s top catcher; seven players were selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft; and Anthony Meo and Cody Wheeler were named to the Louisville Slugger AllAmerica Second Team; and
Whereas, in addition, under the appreciative gaze of 26,624 fans at both the Myrtle Beach Regional and Super Regional, the Chanticleers made theirsecond appearance in the Super Regional, also their second in the last three seasons; and
Whereas, the team won three straight elimination games in the Myrtle Beach Regional, defeating the College of Charleston 1110 in 10 innings to advance to the Super Regional, for which the Chanticleers served as hosts for the first time in both school and Big South history; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in recognizing the young men of theCoastal Carolina University baseball team for leading with excellence both in the classroom and on the field and expects to hear of continued great achievements in the years ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Coastal Carolina University baseball team for its outstanding season and for capturing the 2010 Big South Tournament Championship title, and honor the team’s exceptional players, coaches, and staff.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to President David Anthony DeCenzo and Head Coach Gary Gilmore of Coastal Carolina University.
