2007 CGH Champion Dave Baxter

Dateline: Puerto Rico

Commissioner's Summary:

The 32nd CGH tourney was held for the first time off the N. American continent. A small field of six made the trip, the smallest since Colorado, to Puerto Rico and were not disappointed. Five of the six were former champions and between the golf, beach everyday, casino every night and the Tapas…all had an unforgettable trip.

The weather was typical for Puerto Rico. Hot and steamy but we were lucky and did not get rained on. The AM was conducted on the Westin River course. The Greg Norman design was soft from a lot of rain and the greens were slow. Davey Baxter served notice early by shooting a 38 on the front. His putter was red hot. Where was Jimmy? He was playing with Julio the accountant.

The first official round was played at Coco Beach Lake/Mountain. A nice front followed by a nearly great back side allowed Roman to sprint out in front. His net 78, which featured a near ace on #6, was one stroke better than Blane who had a net 79 despite wallet issues.

After big steaks and a hot crap table at Conquistador on Friday night it was back to Coco Beach on Saturday for round two. This is where the tournament swung. Blane blazes to a front side 41 hitting virtually every fairway and green. Just when it looked like he would put it in the freezer, disaster struck. A 10 on number 12 and another 10 on 18 along with two triples buried Blano for good. He went from a lock to a mock in just over an hour.

Taking advantage of all this was Dave, Roman and Jeff who all were within two strokes of each other heading into the final day. Blane was still one stroke out, Jimmy 5 and Eric 9 after a second consecutive 89.

Tension ruled on the first tee for Sunday's final round. Jimmy put on the rally cap to defend with a front side 48. Dave scraped it around with a 47 and those two looked to the finish. Jimmy closed out to end with a solid net 84 to finish at 258. Blane tried a back nine charge put Saturday's back nine "El Yunque" was too much. Even Eric tried to rally from way back with a final 85. But Dave did what he had to do despite an eruption of controversy (*see more with Scoop Bogey). His net 88 secured a 1 stroke win. It was Dave's first win in over thirteen tries!

Mazel Tov Dave!!!

2006 CGH Champion Jimmy Yameen

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, Alabama
October 12-15, 2006
Courses:
Ross Bridges 71.3/118
Oxmoor Valley Ridge 71.6/136
Capitol Hill Judge 72.6/132
Capitol Hill Legislator 70.8/124

Commissioner's Summary:

It is hard to imagine that the group on the years Green Hat could play four of the best courses we have ever been on, had beautiful weather, great meals and accommodations and all of that be overshadowed. This is not a knock on the dominate victory by Jimmy but the pinnacle event maybe in CGH history occurred on Saturday night. The visit to Jordan Hare stadium at Auburn for the AU/UF football game was off the charts. 88000 orange clad crazies, terrific weather and a balls off game between the #2 and # 11 teams in the nation will not soon be forgotten. The tailgate, the band pre-game, the flight of the Eagle, southern Chuckie, War Eagle and It's great to be an Auburn tiger fan. A great memory for all of us!

Let's get to the golf . The four courses on this Hat were one of the best collections we ever played. The Am kicked off at the impressive Ross Bridges. At 8191 yards, Ross Bridge is the 3rd longest course in the world. Granted we did not play it from the tips but a great test for all nine of this years players was at hand. Everybody enjoyed the play with no one distinguishing themselves.

The first round was played on a chilly morning on the hilly Oxmoor Valley Ridge course. Long and tough this was a great track. One of the early stories was the health of our leader. He showed the kind of guts and fortitude that all would have expected playing with a severely sprained ankle. The day belonged to Jimmy. His first round net 79 was the best round by 11 strokes. He played solid and steady and set up his entire weekend. Davey Baxter, making his first tourney in three years shot a net 88. Eric tied low gross with Dave and Jimmy at 92.

The second round went from moving day to catch Jimmy day. The Judge course at Capitol hill is a great golf course pure and simple. The opening hole is one of Americas best. Jimmy was paired with the chairman and Tommy and his nerves showed early in the cold conditions. He started triple-quad and he looked on the ropes. The difference was that this year he steadied himself and ended with a solid net 88. In hindsight, that was the championship right there. Despite his start his was low net of the day. Jeff May had his second straight net 91 and did nothing to help his repeat cause. Dave still held second and they both joined Jimmy in the final group on Sunday. Note, Craig did not do well…phew!

The final round was played on Sunday morning after the big game on Saturday night. It was really a coronation for Jimmy. He did not play well but his cushion was insurmountable. He did finish in style, par par, to wrap up the title. Dave finished second 9 strokes behind and tied Eric for low gross. Blane shot a net 86 to steal third. Tom also played well to round out the top four. Craig…phew!

Jimmy wins his first title. Despite the fact he probably doesn't realize it, we all congratulate him!

Williamsburg, VA
2005 CGH Champion

Jeff May
To All CGHers:
The 2005 CGH proved once again that we can take a great venue with great golf courses and turn it into an ugly weekend. This year's field of 11 had a great mix of former champ, long lost returnees and even a rookie.
The Williamsburg area lived up to the test of a terrific choice. The golf was some of the best and toughest (note the course ratings and slopes below) ever played on any Hat.
The weekend started on Thursday with the traditional 'AM' round at the River course at Kingmill. The River course is a sweet Pete Dye designed course that has hosted numerous men's and women's pro tourneys.
The players were separated into two teams led by Captain Ferranti and Captain Yameen and dinner was at stake.
The weather was great and the golf was excellent as the players limbered up for the main event. Some decent numbers were shot as Eric, Jeff M, Roman and a blast from the past Joe D broke 90.This was Joe's first CGH since Atlantic City in spring 1992.
The first round of the 2005 Hat was played on a diabolical modern layout at Stonehouse. The course became the real story as it evoked raves and rants from the players. After Roman led off with first tee honors, from the melee Jimmy broke out and shot a sterling net 83 to seize the lead. His round featured a birdie 2 on the third hole. That score was 6 shots clear of his personal arch rival Tom at 89 who had a nice 44 on the front. The rest of the group was clumped in the low nineties with Roman and Craig at 92 and tied for third.
Round two took place at Stonehouses sister course, Royal New Kent. A course on the verge of great, RNK is a modern links layout that tests any game. Jimmy turned into a one day wonder with a horrendous net 109. With his fading, everyone else seemed to hop back into the picture. Brian surged into a first place tie with a net 89. Larry joined the group with a net 91 and Craig made three with his net 92. This trio of leaders (184) was two clear of Jeff M who would round out the final group on Sunday. Also in the mix was Tom at 190 and Roman at 192. Jeff G imploded to last place while his "date " for the weekend Todd showed rookie nerves and finished two rounds in 10th place. The stage was set for a fabulous Sunday finish.
Played at one of the countries finest traditional layouts, the Golden Horseshoe was the perfect stage for the drama of the day. Noise was made early by a CGH legend as Eric, playing in the first group, made the turn in 43 and when he birdied the famous par 3 16th, the roars of the gallery echoed through the stately Virginia pines in Augusta like fashion. While Eric was making a Sunday charge, the tension in the final group was being felt. Larry opened hot with 4 pars in his first five but faded. Craig never got out of the gate. That left Brian and Jeff M standing to the finish. * for a detailed insider recap of the leaders final round see below*.
Despite Eric's big charge he finished double/ single to end up at 85, tied with Craig for third four strokes behind. That left Brian and Jeff M on the 18th tee tied. The summary is a snowman by Wood a double by May and for the first time in exactly twenty years Jeff May wears the Green Hat.
Jeff's win creates the largest gap between Hat wins: 20 years. The last time was in 1985 at Cape Cod CC in Mass.
Mazel Tov Jeff M !!!
Notes:
  • A scoring inquiry was made and a review completed. Jeff was listed on the official score sheet as a 9 HCP before the tournament began. An audit of scores show he actually won by three strokes not two as an error in round one was made.
  • Please check out Scoop Bogey's insider report (coming soon) and an up close and personal account of the final group/final round shootout.
  • Look for a couple of rule updates coming soon regarding ties, out of bounds and scoring caps.
  • Also look out for an update on where the Hat goes next. It will be posted soon.
Thanks for coming, attendance is what makes this work.

Toronto, Canada
2004 CGH Champion
Roman Leniw
To All CGHers:
This years CGH had a slightly smaller field of 10 participants all vying for the most "coveted" prize in golf. Sixty percent of the group were former champs which clearly added validity to the notion that experience would rule in Canada. Speaking of Canada, the CGH's first international foray was a master stroke. Toronto could be one of the best cities in the world. Great food, nightlife, FABULOUS hotels and the "talent" was amazing. It was uniformly agreed that we also played some of the best golf ever on this years Hat. So the stage was set for a classic outing and here's what went down.
The 'Am" was played at famed Gen Abbey, home of the Canadian Open. Because the Open was two weeks away the practice round was dominated by PGA tour rough, which had to be 4" or more. This is the kind of spinach those guys play every week and boy was it tough! The feature hole is the amazing 11th. A par 4 with a vertical drop of about 100 feet. How 'bout ,play.
Tom had the traditional first tee honor as defending champ at a fabulous track named Copper Creek. Hilly, tight and beautiful, this course played hard from the blue tees. Lucky for all our pride he didn't hook it into the pond on #1. Again, scoring was solid as 4 players bettered 91. Jeff G, coming off last years final round implosion and pending nuptials, led with an 87. While CGH veteran commish Eric shot a gross 89.Brian and Roman put themselves in good position for round 2 with matching 91's. The group also had to deal with an hour and a half rain delay. Weather affected almost every round and definitely played a major role in the outcome.
Round two was dominated by Blane. He started by being late for the bus, and as Scoop Bogey will discuss in his column, was in a matter of speaking, "shitty" on the course as well. As is typical of Blane, when things are "running" against him he can rise to the occasion. His net 82 reminded many of his incredible final round in AZ. Not to be outdone, Roman leaped to the lead with a terrific net 84, while Eric tied Blane for second with a two round total of 180, 5 behind Duffy. Other scores were Craig with a net 92, and Brian's net 95, which proved he is not ready for primetime matchups with the big boys. Tom continued his "valiant " defense with a net 103 placing him next to last (2003 fluke anyone?).
The final was set with three former champs in the hunt and playing together in the final pairing on the great Angus Glen golf course.. Eric started off fast, nearly acing the par three 2nd. He added another 2 on # 6 and was in full charge. Blane also was moving. A birdie and three pars of his own narrowed the gap on Roman who couldn't find the fairway and was starting to follow the familiar pattern of a Sunday leader fold. Just when it looked like it was going to be the ultimate Eric v. Blane showdown on the back, God intervened and proved he is Ukrainian. The rain washed away the final nine and left a bitter Eric and Blane. The" kissing your sister" result gave Roman his second Hat, first since his '96 win in Kiawah and the title of 2004 CGH champ.
Congrats Roman (%$@!&*)
Thanks to all for coming.
See you next year!!!
