Core Vaccines

CANINE VACCINATIONS

Core Vaccines

•Firstvaccinationusing recombinant distemper antigen (6-8 weeks of age)

•Boosterevery 2‐4weeksuntil14‐16weeksofage (using high titer parvo vaccine)

•Revaccinatein1yearthenevery3years(orsooner if ‘atrisk’)

•Administersubcutaneouslyovertherightforelimbasdistallyaspossible

(Modified live,parenteral vaccine)

2.RABIES

•Vaccinateat12‐16weeksofage

Non-Core Vaccines

1. Bordetella/Parainfluenza

•Beginvaccinationat> than 3 weeks of age if using intranasal product (or 7-10 days pre-boarding) (Modified live, intranasal)

•If using the killed, parenteral product, give subcutaneously in the left rear leg as distally as possible (starting at 6-8 weeks of age) and booster 3 weeks later

•Booster every 6 – 12 months as needed depending on risk

2.Leptospirosis

•4-way leptospirosis vaccine

•Start at 12 weeks of age and booster at 16 weeks of age, then every 6-12 months depending on risk

• Miniature dachshunds and some toy breeds may be more at risk for anaphylaxis

•Administer subcutaneously in left front leg as distally as possible

•Fractionated, microfiltered bacterin, parenteral

3.Lyme

•Vaccinateat12 weeks of age, booster in 3-4 weeks

•Revaccinateyearly

•Record site used for vaccination

•Only used if at risk or traveling to at risk areas

•Recombinant, parenteral

4. Periodontal Disease Vaccine

•Notusedroutinely ‐have in stock and considerif“atrisk”as an adjunctive control

5. Canine Influenza

•Available for use in at risk patients or when required by boarding kennel

•Vaccinateat12 weeks of age, booster in 3-4 weeks

•Revaccinateyearly

•Adults must be boostered 2-3 weeks after initial vaccination

•Only used if at risk (show dogs, boarding in at risk areas) or traveling to at risk areas

•Killed, parenteral

6.Corona

•Notused‐considerfor“atrisk”dogs

7.Giardia

•Notused‐considerif“atrisk”as an adjunctive control

*Theseareonlyrecommendationsandshouldbeusedinlightofeachindividual

Veterinarian’sdoctor/patient/clientrelationshipandindividualriskassessmentofeach patient.Vaccinationiscriticalinthepreventionandeliminationofdisease.Ingeneral,

veterinaryvaccinesaresafeandefficaciousandthebenefitsoutweightherisks.Recognizethatvaccinationisamedicalprocedurethatshouldincludethesameconsiderationsandreasoningskillsrequiredforanyothermedicaltreatmentorsurgicalprocedure.
