Job Summary/Purpose:

The Enterostomal Therapy (ET) RN is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for providing teaching to patient / family members who are preparing for this surgical procedure. The ET RN further provides consultative services for wound and incontinence care as well as staff education in ostomy, wound and incontinence care.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current State Illinois Registered Nurse License

Certified in Enterostomal Care

CPR Certified

Essential Physical Requirements:

·  Ability to perform light to heavy work, which includes frequent lifting and positioning of patients.

·  For greater than 50 pounds it may be expected that the nurse will request assistance from a co-worker for lifting and transferring.

·  Ability to stand/walk 6 to 8 hours per shift.

·  Ability to frequently bend, twist, reach, stoop and occasionally kneel and squat.

·  Ability to perform various repetitive tasks i.e., simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation (keyboard).

·  Good visual acuity is required for patient assessment, medication administration and documentation of care.

·  Good hearing is essential for accurate patient assessment.

·  All employees within this job classification may have high risk exposure to blood borne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials.

Position Specific Responsibilities and Competencies / Performs assessment of specialized ostomy, wound care or incontinence management needs within 24 hours of consult.
Assesses and marks stoma site pre-operatively.
Assesses the patient and family for self care management of ostomy, wound care and incontinence management. Completes the Multidisciplinary Teaching/Learning Tool.
In collaboration with patient and other caregivers, plans interventions to address ostomy, wound care, incontinence management.
Acts as a consultant to nursing for patients with ostomies, wounds and incontinence.
Assists in the development of standards of care/practice related to wound care, incontinence and ostomies.
Selects and fits ostomy appliance.
Provides staff education related to ostomies, incontinence and specialized wound care management.
Assures patient confidentiality/privacy by:
·  Proper disposal of patient sensitive information.
·  Conduction interviews as privately as possible.
·  Follow release of information policies.
·  Assure any discussions related to patient care are conducted in private.
