A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND THE HONORABLE BEN A. HAGOOD, JR., OF CHARLESTON COUNTY, FOR HIS SIX YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF DISTRICT 112 IN CHARLESTON COUNTY, AND TO WISH HIM HAPPINESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, for six years, the Honorable Ben A. Hagood, Jr., has represented the citizens of House District 112 in Charleston County with intelligence and distinction in the House of Representatives of this great State; and
Whereas, a tireless advocate for conservation of the Palmetto State’s natural beauty, Ben Hagood has strived to benefit not only his own constituents but also South Carolina’s citizenry as a whole; and
Whereas, he laid the foundation for this and other important work through completion of a bachelor of arts with distinction from the University of Virginia and a degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was a member of the South Carolina Law Review. Following law school, Representative Hagood served as law clerk to the Honorable Randall T. Bell, associate judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals; and
Whereas, accepting the call of his country, he spent three years as an activeduty officer in the United States Marine Corps before returning to Charleston, where he was in private practice for several years; and
Whereas, he next took up his duties as an assistant United States attorney, a post that called for him to handle cases involving environmental, drug, and whitecollar crime. These experiences stood him in good stead as a member of the Judiciary Committee in the House, where he also served on the Rules Committee and as chairman of the Special Laws Subcommittee, the Coastal Caucus, and the Governor’s Climate, Energy and Commerce Advisory Committee; and
Whereas, Ben Hagood is the managing partner of Hagood & Kerr, P.A. in Mount Pleasant and gives generously of his free time to various community and faithbased boards, including Agape Ministries of Charleston, South Carolina Coastal Conservation League, Charleston Habitat For Humanity, Inc., and the Trident Literacy Association; and
Whereas, during his years in the House of Representatives, he has not gone unappreciated by those he has served, having received the 2004 South Carolina Wildlife Federation Legislative Conservation Award, the 2005 Maritime Association of the Port of Charleston Legislator of the Year Award, the 2005 Friend to the Taxpayers Award, and the 2006 Golden Advocate Award from the Solicitor’s Victim Advocates Forum; and
Whereas, for twenty years married to his beloved Penn, this lifelong resident of Charleston County is the proud father of their two daughters, Derrill and Nancy. The strong support of his family and his faith, nurtured through the family’s membership at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Charleston, has enabled him to meet successfully the many challenges of a multifaceted life; and
Whereas, Ben Hagood’s colleagues in the House of Representatives, understanding that he will not seek reelection, wish to express their deepest gratitude for his committed service to the people of District 112, as well as their sincere wishes for all the best life has to offer him in the years ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend the Honorable Ben A. Hagood, Jr., of Charleston County, for his six years of faithful service to the citizens of District 112 in Charleston County, and wish him happiness and fulfillment in all his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to our distinguished colleague, the Honorable Ben A. Hagood, Jr.
