A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF PHILANTHROPIST PAUL W. MCALISTER, OF LAURENS COUNTY, THE FORMER CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF CLEMSON UNIVERSITY, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY, HIS MANY FRIENDS, AND HIS COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Paul W. McAlister on January 16, 2008; and

Whereas, Paul W. McAlister was born on June 30, 1919, to the late J. Thomas McAlister and Mae B. McAlister; and

Whereas, when he graduated from Spartanburg High School, his peers had already acknowledged his superior leadership qualities by choosing him as president of the student body; and

Whereas, by 1941, he had graduated from Clemson University, where thirtytwo years later he would be named to the board of trustees; and

Whereas, during World War II, Paul McAlister married his darling Barbara Dial, who remained the love of his life for sixtyfour years; they had two fine sons and two adoring grandchildren; and

Whereas, in the tradition of the noble and patriotic sons of South Carolina, Paul McAlister left the warmth of hearth and home for the Pacific Theatre, where he served in combat with distinction as an infantry officer during World War II; and

Whereas, after returning from the War, he attended the University of South Carolina Law School, where he further distinguished himself by graduating first in his class in 1952; and

Whereas, in the 1960’s, under his strong and wise leadership, the Laurens Glass Company became the fastest growing producer of high quality glass containers in the United States; and

Whereas, when tragedy struck the small family, rather than retreat into grief, Paul McAlister and his wife characteristically responded to the needs of others in establishing the William Hastings McAlister Scholarship Program at Wofford College in memory of their son, a premedical major, an endowment which has produced many doctors; and

Whereas, active in church and community affairs, he served as chairman of the board of the First United Methodist Church of Laurens and on numerous commissions and committees of the church; he also served on the Laurens County School District 55 board of trustees; and

Whereas, a longtime Mason and Shriner, he founded the Laurens County Shrine Club, and after he established the Laurens Family Young Men’s Christian Association, he remained its largest benefactor; and

Whereas, named to the board of trustees of Clemson University in 1973, Paul McAlister served his alma mater faithfully and diligently for seventeen years, even as chairman of the board, and was honored by Clemson with the Alumni Distinguished Service Award and the Clemson Medallion, the university’s highest recognition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of philanthropist Paul W. McAlister, of Laurens County, the former chairman of the Board of Trustees of Clemson University, and extend their deepest sympathy to his family, his many friends, and his community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Barbara Dial McAlister.
