Sign Language Interpreter Contract

All Hands Interpreting Service, Inc. (referred to as “Business”)

And

(referred to as “Interpreter”)

Level of Appointment:

  • Interpreters are NOT employees of Business.
  • Interpreters choose their own schedules and are free to take or decline assignments based on the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics or personal and scheduling conflicts.

Period of Contract:

2 years (renewable subject to interpreter’s satisfactory job performance).
Rate of Pay:

  • Rates are locked for the 2 year contracted time.
  • Rate increases are only allowed for additional certifications obtained or additional educational degrees obtained.
  • Interpreter will be paid a 2 hour minimum on all assignments unless agreed upon by Business.
  • Interpreter will be paid for assignments cancelled with less than 2 business day’s notice.
  • Interpreter will NOT be paid for assignment cancelled with more than 2 business day’s notice.
  • Interpreter will NOT be paid for assignments cancelled upon confirmation.

Responsibilities and Conditions:

  • Adhere and comply with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics. Interpreters found non-compliant will cause Contract to be terminated.
  • Once an assignment has been accepted, the interpreter is responsible for attending the appointment/assignment. Interpreter cannot find substitutes or refer out jobs to other interpreters without the consent of Business.
  • Assignments can only be returned to Business in cases of emergency. If an assignment is returned for ANY reason, a $20 fee will be charged to Interpreter.
  • Taxes and insurance are the responsibility of the Interpreter.
  • Interpreter will refer all assignments back to Business. Interpreter WILL NOT attempt to divert Business’s customers to another interpreting agency or attempt to work directly with Business’s customers.
  • Interpreter must maintain certification with the issuing body by remaining in good standing and completing the minimum number of CEUs. Proof must be submitted if requested.
  • Keep accurate records.
  • Submit clear and complete invoices within 30 days of completion of the assignment. Invoices submitted for assignments beyond 6 months of the scheduled assignment completion date will not be paid. Invoices MUST include ALL of the following information. Invoices will be returned for incomplete information if necessary.
  1. Assignment Date AND Time
  2. Assignment Job Number
  3. Company Interpreted for: ie: Healthpartners, Allina, etc.
  4. Last name of the D/deaf or Hard of Hearing client
  5. Information regarding status: ie: Cancelled upon arrival, client no-show, etc.
  6. Total Amount Due
  • Arrive to the scheduled appointment ON TIME!
  • Interpreters more than 5 minutes late will be docked 15 minutes of pay or the amount of time Interpreter is late; whichever is greater.
  • If it appears that the appointment will not be completed before the scheduled end time, inform the staff with ample notice. DO NOT just walk out!
  • Interpreters who fail to show up for the scheduled appointment will be charged a $30 fee. Recurring fails or late arrivals can be grounds for Contract termination.
  • Interpreter MUST notify Business IMMEDIATELY if an assignment goes past 2 hours. Failure to do so will result in non payment of the additional time.
  • Due to the sensitivity and difficulty in contacting all parties involved with freelance work, it is not recommended that interns/interpreter students attend appointments. If an assignment is accepted where it might be appropriate to bring a student, please notify Business for permission.
  • Business shall not guarantee any certain number of assignments to Interpreter.
  • Interpreter is responsible for any parking, parking tickets, lodging, drive time/mileage, automobile accidents or injuries/accidents or property damage obtained while interpreting unless otherwise agreed upon with Business on a case by case basis.
  • Since Interpreter is NOT an employee of Business, no claim can be brought on for worker’s compensation situations.
  • Interpreter is responsible for his/her interpretation. If Business receives complaints about Interpreter’s work, and Interpreter is found negligent, Interpreter will not collect payment for such assignment. If Business is sued because of Interpreter’s work, Interpreter will be responsible for attorney’s fees for both Business AND Interpreter. In the event Business is required to pay damages from Interpreter’s work, Interpreter will pay the damages.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • RID Certification of Interpretation (CI),RID Certification of Transliteration (CT), RID NIC, NAD Level IV, NAD Level V, ACCI or any combination thereof.
  • Some medical appointments require CT AND CI, NIC or NAD IV or V. Interpreters possessing only 1 of the CT and CI certifications will not be offered those assignments.
  • Interpreters interpreting in a courtroom are required to be CT and CI certified or possess the SC:L certification.

I understand and agree to all of the terms and conditions contained in this Contract. This Contract will become effective as of the date of the last signature below.
