A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR VANDERLYN “VAN” MCCLOUD, COACH OF THE KEENAN HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM, FOR HER EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE LIVES OF THE MANY YOUNG PEOPLE SHE HAS TAUGHT AND COACHED AND TO WISH HER THE BEST IN ALL FUTURE ENDEAVORS UPON HER RETIREMENT.

Whereas, it is with great pride that the General Assembly recognizes those citizens who give tirelessly of themselves in educating and encouraging South Carolina’s youth; and

Whereas, Van McCloud is certainly one such individual, as her fearless attitude and dogged determination have inspired scores of students throughout her career as an educator; and

Whereas, demanding maximum effort from the athletes on every team she has coached, Van McCloud pushes students to perform the best they can, regardless of the outcome on the scoreboard; and

Whereas, leaving an indelible mark on every school at which she has taught and coached, one of her most marked accomplishments was starting the basketball program at her alma mater, Booker T. Washington High School; and

Whereas, encouraging students to focus on five points: God, family, education, sports, and social life, Van McCloud instills a sense of balance in the lives of her students and athletes, often remarking that one has to stay true to the first three points in order to achieve a successful life; and

Whereas, finding great reward in the understanding that she has made a difference in the lives of the students she touched, she is unconcerned with missed state titles and close losses, considering herself a winner because of the successes her students have gone on to achieve in life off the basketball court; and

Whereas, those students who were fortunate enough to learn and play under the direction of Van McCloud are certainly forever changed because of her influence, and the General Assembly thanks her for her love and commitment to South Carolina public schoolchildren. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina recognize and honor Vanderlyn “Van” McCloud, Coach of the Keenan High School Girls Basketball Team, for her outstanding contributions to the lives of the many young people she has taught and coached and wish her the best in all future endeavors upon her retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Van McCloud.
