A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING MISS ERIKA GRACE POWELL OF EASLEY, SOUTH CAROLINA ON BEING CROWNED MISS SOUTH CAROLINA 2005 AND COMPETING IN THE 2006 MISS AMERICA PAGEANT, RECOGNIZING HER MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AND WISHING HER MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Miss Erika Grace Powell of Easley, South Carolina is the daughter of Keith and Deborah Powell, and is a junior at Furman University; and

Whereas, in 2005 she was Miss Golden Corner and then crowned Miss South Carolina. In January, she competed for the title of Miss America 2006 with “Teen Pregnancy Prevention Through Mentoring” as her platform and singing Italian opera for her talent; and

Whereas, during the competition held in Las Vegas, she was one of the top ten finalists, the overall talent winner, and winner of the Bernie Wayne Award and Scholarship for Best in Performing Arts; and

Whereas, Erika’s dedication is not limited to competitions. She has volunteered over 1,000 hours, including a partnership with The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, raised over $3,000 for the prevention of teen pregnancy, was featured on an NBC affiliate prior to Katie Couric’s special, “The 411: Teens and Sex,” and recognized as a keynote speaker for numerous civic, church, and school related functions; and

Whereas, Erika, as noted by her numerous awards, is immensely talented. She performed the lead role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi Opera, was featured as a soloist at Furman University’s Opera Gala, received the Miss South Carolina Overall Talent Award, and is a recipient of the Furman University Vocal Performance Scholarship; and

Whereas, Erika hopes to further her education with a Master’s degree in Vocal Performance and her ultimate ambition is to have a performance career in theater, concert halls, and recording venues worldwide. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulating Miss Erika Grace Powell on being crowned Miss South Carolina 2005 and competing in the 2006 Miss America Pageant, recognizing her many accomplishments, and wishing her much success in all of her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Miss Erika Powell.
