The Phillis Wheatley School, partnered with Beer Hagolah Institutes, proposes “The IROQUOIS Nation Museum” to improve student achievement in ELA.
“The IROQUOIS Nation Museum” will feature 4th grade students producing a website honoring the Iroquois Nation.” This site will house a hall of fame containing the different tribes that make up the Iroquois Nation: the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, and Seneca. This site will also offer the reader guided tours of each tribe including: their homes, celebrations, agriculture, crafts, clothing, important people, etc. In the “Dream Catcher” section, students will read Native Myths and Fables, interview family members and synthesize their own oral histories. These histories will be turned into folklore, adding music and pictures, turning these histories into downloadable podcasts.
All student created activities about the “The IROQUOIS Nation,” website will be aligned to NYS ELA Standards 1, 2, and 3, Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking on the 4th grade level.
In order to facilitate the objectives of the “The IROQUOIS Nation,” project, teachers will be involved in after school staff development, push in project support, as well as Local and/or Regional Peer Review sessions. The Peer Review process is a NYS professional development initiative designed to help teachers improve the achievement of all students by enhancing teachers’ abilities to provide quality instruction based on the New York State Learning Standards. This project will culminate with teachers preparing Learning Experience Outlines to present at Local/Regional Peer Review Sessions as a way to assess the validity of the project and help teachers improve classroom instruction based on the New York State Learning Standards.
