PERFECT RIVERSIDE LEADS ARC, SADDLEBACK, LANEY; 2 WEEKS LEFT
San Mateo (Oct. 31, 2016)–Riverside City College remains the lone perfect team in the state championship hunt and continues to head the JC Athletic Bureau’s statewide poll of California Community College football coaches this week, taking 15 of 16 first place votes. With two weeks of regular season play remaining, Riverside plays at No. 11 Long Beach Saturday in a National Central battle before closing at home with No. 9 (and current league co-leader) Mt. San Antonio.
College of San Mateo knocked off defending state champion City College of San Francisco, 24-21, last week to take sole possession of first place in the Bay 6 and make the biggest leap this week from No. 16 to twelfth. The Bulldogs play at No. 6 Santa Rosa JC Saturday, with the opportunity to clinch a state berth – or fall back into a possible 3-way tie including now No. 13 CCSF. The north’s other two National Division leagues have first place showdowns Saturday among 3-0 league teams: No. 7 Butte at No. 2 American River in the NorCal League and No. 4 Laney at No. 10 Modesto in the ValleyLeague.
In Southern California Football Association National Division leagues, No. 8 Ventura, the Northern League leader, visits co-second No. 14 Bakersfield. Southern League pacesetter No. 19 Golden West entertains No. 22 Grossmont before closing at co-second place (and just once beaten)No. 5 Fullerton on Nov. 12. No. 3 Saddleback, which has lost only to Golden West this season, hopes for help, while finishing at Palomar and then at home with neighbor Orange Coast.
Each region will qualify three Nationalleague champions and one at-large team to contest the CCCAA state title, beginning Nov. 19.
American Division play continues for regional bowl berths. Still with perfect (8-0) records are No. 15 Los Angeles Valley, No. 17 Shasta, and No. 18 Southwestern. Saturday in the Northern California Football Association, Hartnell finishes Golden Coast League play at No. 25 Monterey Peninsula,looking for the title. Virtual co-leaders MPC and West Hills, each also with one league loss so far, will have one more game left.Shasta, which plays at Foothill, has a 1-game lead in the Pacific 7 over No. 24 Los Medanos and Redwoods, who meet Saturday in Eureka to stay in contention. Redwoods closes at Shasta Nov. 12.
The SCFA has a sole leader in each American Division league. Southwestern faces a Saturday Mountain League showdown at second place Desert. In the Pacific League, LA Valley hosts Citrus Saturday before closing at currently second place Santa Barbara. East LA has already beaten its closest Metro League challengers (West LA and Santa Ana, who play Saturday) and finishes with co-fourth Pasadena and Glendale.
