2004 SHELL-NAC ARTS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Jason Wee Han Chong (26 years old)

Amount: $100,000

Course: 2-year Master in Fine Arts (Photography and Related Technologies)

Parsons School of Design, New York

1st year commenced in July 04

Jason was awarded an NAC project grant for the Celestial Encounters, a photography exhibition at Utterly Art. He was also a recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship at the Parsons School of Design. An editor with Vehicle Arts Journal, published by Plastique Kinetic Worms, Jason has an Honours degree in Political Science. Jason is a photographer keenly interested in new art and new technologies. He works primarily in digital photography and his art has been exhibited in both Singapore and Malaysia, including 2 solos, and the 22nd UOB Painting of the Year exhibition.

Wilson Neo Yong Soon (23 years old)

Course: 4-year Bachelor of Chinese Instrument Major (Erhu)

23-year-old Wilson has received an NAC project grant for a recital concert in July 2003 at the Victoria Concert Hall. He came out first in the National Chinese Music Competition (erhu open) organised by NAC in 2002. The greatest award he achieved was the International Youth Chinese Instrument Competition 2002 held in Beijing, China. He was awarded the Silver Prize in the Erhu Amateur category. Currently a part-time erhu performer with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Wilson hopes to understand the theory of music in order to better hone his performance skills. His proposed course of studies towards a Bachelor of Chinese Instrument Major (Erhu) at the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing, China will be his first degree in music.

Tan Shzr Ee (29 years old)

Ms Tan Shzr Ee is a former Straits Times’ arts correspondent and has written extensively on cultural issues for the paper and other publications, including academic journals. Some of her stories have been picked up on Internet news services including ArtsJournal.com. She was awarded the Masters Music in Ethnomusicology (Distinction), graduating at the top of her class and winning a SOAS aware for best thesis in college’s 5 year’s history. For this PhD study, she was also awarded the SOAS scholarship. As a classical pianist, she had performed regularly at various colleges as soloist, chamber musician and accompanist.

Debbie Teo Hwee Lee (26 years old)

Course: 1-year Graduate Diploma, The University of New South Wales, Australia

Debbie is currently a student at NAFA, pursuing a diploma in Fine Art. She just completed her first year in NAFA but she was offered a Graduate Diploma course at the University of New South Wales, Australia, which would lead to a Masters of Art due to her outstanding results in NAFA. Being a Botany graduate from the National University of Singapore, her foundation in research and ethos have helped in her disciplined learning, which are crucial qualities in her future endeavours in the art. She was the winner in the intermediate category of Youth Designers Award 1995 and she also clinched a Certificate of Merit in the Singapore Youth Festival Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1996. Debbie’s most impressive accomplishment was her work for a group exhibition, Water Art Exhibition, which was opened at Indochine at Wisma Atria in June 2004.
