A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF MARIAH HANKERSON JOHNSON, OF AIKEN COUNTY, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2003, AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mariah Hankerson Johnson, of Aiken, on November 25, 2003; and

Whereas, Mrs. Johnson, a reserved, quiet, and friendly person, was very active in her community and was a faithful member and devoted leader at Second Baptist Church; she actively served on the church’s Deaconess Board, where her contributions were invaluable; and

Whereas, as a graduate of Claflin College in Orangeburg, Mrs. Johnson placed a high value on education, evidenced through her life’s work as a school teacher and as founder of the Second Baptist Church College Scholarship Fund; and

Whereas, the Church College Scholarship Fund provides a monetary gift to every college student in the congregation, and is a living legacy to Mrs. Johnson’s commitment to education and to the youth of her community; and

Whereas, Mrs. Johnson was an exemplary role model who served proudly as a volunteer deputy registrar and regularly as a poll manager; she was also a member and strong supporter of the League of Women Voters; and

Whereas, Mrs. Johnson was also a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a longtime patron of the Aiken Civic Ballet Company, a member of Eastern Star, and a charter member of the Prince Hall Assembly of the Order of the Golden Circle; and

Whereas, Mrs. Johnson’s passing leaves a void, not only in the hearts and lives of her family and friends, but also in the many civic, religious, and fraternal organizations to which she belonged; she was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Mariah Hankerson Johnson, of Aiken County, Tuesday, November 25, 2003, and convey deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to the family of Mrs. Mariah Hankerson Johnson.
