5TH ANNUAL CALENDAR ART CONTEST

Earth Day 2008 Calendar Art Contest

We invite all students to celebrate Earth Day 2008 by competing in the Hudson County Improvement Authority’s (HCIA) Earth Day 2008 Calendar Art Contest.

Who? Any student from Kindergarten through 12th grade is eligible to participate.

Four pieces of artwork will be selected from each of the following grade levels and used to inspire the HCIA’s Calendar: (1) Kindergarten to Grade 2; (2) Grade 3 – Grade 5; (3) Grade 6 – Grade 8; and (4) Grade 9 – Grade 12. A 16-month calendar (September 2008 through December 2009) will be printed featuring the 16 posters which best depict this year’s theme: “No Child Left Inside.” Calendars will be distributed in all County schools at the start of the 2008-2009 school year and will also be available at the HCIA for interested residents.

What? Congressman John Sarbanes of Maryland and Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island introduced federal legislation that strengthens and expands environmental education in America's classrooms and reconnects children with nature. These bills, each entitled the No Child Left Inside Act of 2007, were introduced in the House (H.R.3036) and the Senate (S.1981). Outdoor adventures are becoming increasingly challenging for children because of urbanization and because kids are more plugged into indoor technology, say child advocates who are rallying for a national movement to get kids outdoors again.

Earth Day is a celebration of our environment and nature – the air, water, land, resources and ecosystems. The theme of this year’s celebration is “No Child Left Inside” and, therefore, we are looking for artwork that fosters local environmental stewardship. Posters can focus on any part of the Hudson County environment: the fish and wildlife found in our county; our rivers and streams; our streets, parks, walkways and bicycle paths; how litter effects more than our streets; our air quality; how climate change can affect us; or how we can help our environment by recycling or source reduction.

All artwork must be original and signed by the artist. It may be done in marker, crayon, watercolor, ink, acrylic or tempera paint. The brighter colors make the best poster! No computer generated art or glued collages are allowed. All artwork must by 11” H x 14” W. The theme, “No Child Left Inside”, must be on the poster, spelled correctly and easy to read.

Prizes to be awarded:

Top four pieces in each grade level: $100 Gift Certificate

In addition, four pieces in each grade level will be awarded “Second Place” and will receive a certificate and have their artwork displayed on the HCIA website and in the calendar.

Where? The winners of the Earth Day Poster Contest will be honored and presented their awards at Liberty State Park on Saturday, April 19, 2008. All winning entries will be displayed during the Earth Day 2008 Celebration.

In addition to the award ceremonies, we will have an Earth Day Celebration beginning at 10 AM with the Annual 5K Run/Fitness Walk and Kids’ Fun Run. In addition, from 10 AM to 4 PM, we will sponsor the Earth Day Kids’ Kingdom featuring environmental displays, live entertainment, inflatable rides, games, contests, arts and crafts activities and food.

When? All entries must be received in the HCIA offices by Friday, March 28, 2008. Winners will be notified by Wednesday, April 2, 2008.

How? Please fax or mail the enclosed application, by Friday, March 7, 2008, to advise us that your school will be participating.

Each entry must include the following information on the back of the poster:

Student Name: ________________________________ Grade: __________

School: ____________________________________________________________

Municipality: ________________________________________________________

Teacher Name: ______________________________________________________

Any entry that does not include this information will be disqualified.

The success of our Earth Day Celebration largely depends upon the support of our schools. We hope you will encourage your students to participate in the calendar art contest and to attend the Earth Day 2008 Fair on Saturday, April 19. If you have any questions regarding the contest or the race and festival, please call our Environmental Hotline at 1-800-540-0987 or send an e-mail to .
