A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE BENEDICT COLLEGE “TIGERS” MENS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH FRED WATSON AND HIS STAFF FOR AN EXCEPTIONAL SEASON AND TO WISH THEM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE.

Whereas, being a member of a sports team allows young men to have the opportunity to learn the skills of cooperation and teamwork with developing great athletic talents; and

Whereas, to be a champion in basketball, all members of the team and coaching staff must have outstanding leadership and physical abilities; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are very pleased to learn that the Benedict College “Tigers” recently earned a berth in the prestigious NCAA Championships for the first time in the history of Benedict College; and

Whereas, the “Tigers” compiled an overall record of 209, which was among the best in the State and the team was 155 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC); and

Whereas, with their record of 155 in the SIAC, the Benedict College “Tigers” went on to earn the SIAC regular season championship, finish their regular season at 178, tie for second place, and earn the number three seed in the SIAC Tournament; and

Whereas, in addition to athletic ability and teamwork, skilled coaching and player dedication are also essential to winning, all of which was clearly evident with the Benedict College Mens Basketball team; and

Whereas, this impressive level of competition could not have been accomplished without the leadership and guidance of Head Coach Fred Watson, who received the SIAC Coach of the Year Award and the Tournament Coach of the Year Award; and

Whereas, finishing eighth in the NCAA Division II Southern Region poll, Benedict College was ranked as high as the sixth seed throughout the season, and their commitment to the game contributed heavily to their outstanding performance throughout the season; and

Whereas, Joshua Obiajunwa, who was named Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All SICA first team, and Eugene Jackson, named to the All SICA second team and the SIAC Tournament Team Most Valuable Player, were two outstanding members of Benedict College’s championship team; and

Whereas, with the help of Malik McCullough and Jair Perea, both named to the first team All Academic Team, the Benedict College “Tigers” were able to secure victory and finish their season as champions; and

Whereas, the members of this outstanding team are Eugene Jackson, Samuel Gortman, Dequincy Brown, Pete Asmond, Randy Booker, Malik McCullough, Travis Mack, Charles Bankhead, Joel Brown, Joshua Obiajunwa, Corey Myers, Rick Lewis, Jair Perea, and Charles Johnson; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly commend these fine young men and especially Head Coach Fred Watson, along with his coaching staff, on their team spirit, enthusiasm, and their extraordinary achievements. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the Sate of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Benedict College “Tigers” Mens Basketball Team and Head Coach Fred Watson and his staff, for an exceptional season and wish them continued success in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Benedict College Mens Basketball Team and Head Coach Fred Watson.
