A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE UNION COUNTY AND THE CAST, CREW, AND SUPPORTERS OF “TURN THE WASHPOT DOWN”, SOUTH CAROLINA’S FIRST EVER FOLK LIFE PLAY, WHICH WAS PRESENTED IN UNION COUNTY LAST SUMMER, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR A SIMILAR SUCCESS OF “WHAT GOES AROUND”, A SECOND FULL-LENGTH PLAY TO BE PRESENTED IN JUNE.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that South Carolina’s first folk life play was presented in Union County; and

Whereas, in July and August 2002, Boogaloo Broadcasting Company, Inc., a not-for-profit organization in Union County, presented “Turn the Washpot Down”, based on stories covering more than one hundred fifty years and gathered from all over Union County; and

Whereas, each of its eleven performances played to sold out audiences and received tremendous critical acclaim; and

Whereas, in addition to coverage by the local newspaper and radio station, the play was covered by the Associated Press, many state newspapers, the Charlotte Observer, People Magazine, and upstate television stations. Articles were included in the winter edition of American Theatre and the spring publication of Northwestern, the news magazine of Northwestern University; and

Whereas, underwritten largely by local businessman Art Sutton, the event was developed and presented under the leadership of Chicago-based Community Performances, Inc., and included original music and choreography. The cast and crew were all citizens of Union, many of whom had never performed on stage before; and

Whereas, the effort is on-going and the second full-length play will be presented in June 2003. Again based on Union County stories, this presentation will be a musical comedy, “What Goes Around”, again featuring local citizens as cast and crew. The new project is funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support for the National Endowment for the Arts; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and commend Union County and all the cast, crew, and supporters for the success of South Carolina’s first ever folk life play held in the summer of 2002 and extend best wishes for a similar success for the second play to be presented in June 2003. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate Union County and the cast, crew, and supporters of “Turn the Washpot Down”, South Carolina’s first ever folk life play, which was presented in Union County last summer, and extend their best wishes for a similar success of “What Goes Around”, a second full-length play to be presented in June.
