A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND BO SHAW OF SUMTER FOR HIS OUTSTANDING BUSINESS ACUMEN AND DEDICATION TO FORESTRY THAT ENABLED HIM TO CONVERT HIS ONEMAN FORESTRY AND TIMBERLAND OPERATION INTO THE MAJOR FORESTRY AND TIMBERLAND MANAGEMENT AND CONSULTING FIRM OF SHAW, MCLEOD, BELSER & HURLBUTT, INC.; TO CONGRATULATE HIM AND HIS FIRM ON THEIR RECENT ACQUISITION AND MERGER WITH CANAL FOREST RESOURCES COMPANY OF CHARLOTTE; AND TO WISH HIM AND THE FIRM, DOING BUSINESS UNDER THE NEW NAME OF AMERICAN FOREST MANAGEMENT, INC., EVERY SUCCESS IN ALL OF ITS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Mr. Bo Shaw grew up with an interest in timberland. His greatgrandfather, D. W. Alderman, was in the sawmill business. His father, Bartow Shaw, Sr., was in the lumber business and was a partner with Shaw Lumber; and

Whereas, Mr. Shaw studied forestry in college and started his consulting firm in 1966. In the beginning, Shaw sold his services to larger consulting companies. When some of those company officials retired, they turned over their clients to him. He gradually built his clientele, mostly by word of mouth and trade association activities; and

Whereas, eventually Mr. Shaw was able to bring in two partners, Frank McLeod and Roy Belser. The trio later acquired a Walterboro company, Hurlbutt Forestry, and took on a fourth partner, Boris Hurlbutt. Over the years, the list of partners grew to a total of eight taking on the name Shaw, McLeod, Belser & Hurlbutt, Inc.; and

Whereas, by 2001, the firm, which assists clients in buying, selling, and managing timberland, employed thirtyfive people. The company’s success was capped last year by the acquisition of the Charlotte company Canal Forest Resources. The merger was completed just this month. Today, the company manages more than two billion dollars worth of timberland and employs one hundred twenty people, who work out of twentyfour offices in twelve states. It also operates under the new name of American Forest Management, Inc.; and

Whereas, American Forest Management serves 1,800 clients across the country. About twenty percent of the company’ s one hundred twenty employees work out of the Sumter office. The rest of the company’s employees work in offices located across the Southeast and in Wisconsin and Michigan, but company consultants have worked in other parts of the country, including Maine, New York, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana; and

Whereas, American Forest Management has six divisions: forest management, technology, real estate appraisals, environment management, which is involved in conservation easements, and wetlands mitigation. The sixth group is investment services, which specializes in transactions that involve several hundred thousand acres, including pension funds that invest in timberland. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Bo Shaw of Sumter for his outstanding business acumen and dedication to forestry that enabled him to convert his oneman forestry and timberland operation into the major forestry and timberland management and consulting firm of Shaw, McLeod, Belser & Hurlbutt, Inc.; congratulate him and his firm on their recent acquisition and merger with Canal Forest Resources Company of Charlotte; and wish him and the firm, doing business under the new name of American Forest Management, Inc., every success in all of its future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Bo Shaw of Sumter.
