A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE GRATITUDE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE AFRICAN‑AMERICAN WOMEN OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANT INFLUENCES OF THESE WOMEN IN THE EVERYDAY LIVES OF ALL CITIZENS OF THIS STATE AND COUNTRY BY NAMING MARCH 20, 2003, “NOTABLE AFRICAN‑AMERICAN WOMEN’S DAY” AS A PART OF THE OBSERVANCE OF WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH.

Whereas, the month of March marks a time to remember the influences of women throughout the history of the United States and the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, women of all races have made great impacts on the lives of the people of this nation; and

Whereas, African‑American women, in particular, have played a huge role in shaping South Carolina into the great State it is today; and

Whereas, these women have used their maternal instincts to nurture people from all backgrounds and have helped them to become influential individuals in this State and this country; and

Whereas, African‑American women have stood up against this world’s injustices and fought to rid this country of unfair thoughts and practices; and

Whereas, African‑American women provide much needed educational and social support to both their families and their communities by encouraging all to develop the necessary skills to be successful; and

Whereas, the telling of history of South Carolina would be incomplete without giving appropriate recognition to the significant African‑American women of this State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, wish to express their gratitude to the African‑American women of South Carolina and recognize the important influences of these women in the everyday lives of all citizens of this State and country by naming March 20, 2003, “Notable African‑American Women’s Day” as a part of the observance of Women’s History Month.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mack T. Hines III, author of 20/20: An Inspirational Look at 20 of South Carolina’s Most Notable African‑American Women.
