TO CONGRATULATE THE DUNES GOLF AND BEACH CLUB OF MYRTLE BEACH ON COMPLETING RENOVATIONS TO THE HISTORIC CLUB’S CLUBHOUSE FACILITIES AND TO OFFER BEST WISHES TO THE CLUB’S OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, TRUSTEES AND MEMBERS DURING THE DEDICATION CELEBRATION OF THE NEW FACILITIES APRIL 26-27, 2001.

Whereas, a Declaration for Charter was submitted to the Secretary of State and its charter was issued on June 22, 1948; and

Whereas, the golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, was constructed and nine holes opened for play in 1949 with the second nine holes opening in 1950; and

Whereas, the original clubhouse and dining room was opened and operational by the spring of 1950 with the opening party held on April 7 for 150 members and guests, with The Myrtle Beach News reporting the event as “the outstanding social event of the spring season”; and

Whereas, over the years, the Club added swimming pool facilities, tennis courts, a tennis pro shop and renovated or added to the original clubhouse; and

Whereas, the Club made history in 1966 with the innovative offer of golf packages, allowing a golfer to secure lodging, breakfast and golf course accommodations, including guaranteed starting times; and

Whereas, the golf course gained acclaim and has since received recognition as one of “America’s Greatest 100 Golf Courses”; and

Whereas, the Club hosted many important golf tournaments, including the Women’s US Open, finals of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament and six Senior Tour Championships; and

Whereas, the Club has hosted the Annual Golf Writers Association of American Championship each year since 1954, which continues to provide national exposure of the coastal beauty and hospitality found in Myrtle Beach and the Great State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the Club has contributed to the success of the Myrtle Beach Community and the promotion of our Great State for some fifty-three years. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly do hereby congratulate the Dunes Golf and Beach Club of Myrtle Beach on the completion of the clubhouse renovations and offer best wishes to the Club’s officers, directors, trustees, and members at the dedication celebration to be held April 26 and 27, 2001.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to President Billy Alford on behalf of the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
