A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND CHIEF MAGISTRATE GEORGE MCFADDIN OF SUMTER FOR HIS COURAGE DISPLAYED IN HIS RESPONSE TO AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT NEAR INTERSTATE 95.

Whereas, Sumter Chief Magistrate George McFaddin was the first volunteer firefighter on the scene of an automobile accident near Interstate 95 on Tuesday night, May 7, 2002; and

Whereas, Chief Magistrate McFaddin, a dedicated and courageous volunteer firefighter since 1974, was the first to respond to the call from Station 17 in the SalemBlack River area; and

Whereas, the 1999 Toyota that Pamela Dukes was driving had flipped into a ditch and caught on fire when she lost control of her car as she was traveling south on Forge Road; and

Whereas, McFadden, in full firefighter gear, including helmet and face guard, was trying to extinguish the automobile fire when an explosion under the hood propelled a piece of the flaming engine which struck him in the head; and

Whereas, Sumter and Clarendon Counties sent emergency workers to the scene after they learned that a firefighter was down with unspecified injuries; and

Whereas, Chief Magistrate McFaddin was taken to Toumey Regional Medical Center where he was treated for a concussion and released a few hours later; and

Whereas, Pamela Dukes, who had already crawled from the vehicle to safety, was airlifted to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital with head injuries and was listed in fair condition after the accident; and

Whereas, Chief Magistrate George McFaddin, mindful of his responsibilities, returned to his chambers the next day with a headache but generally in good health; and

Whereas, it is appropriate that the members of the House of Representatives pause in recognition of such a valiant and courageous South Carolinian as Chief Magistrate George McFaddin of Sumter. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend Chief Magistrate George McFaddin of Sumter for his courage displayed during a response to an automobile accident near Interstate 95.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Chief Magistrate George McFaddin of Sumter.
