A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE MIDWAY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH LOCATED IN WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, AS ITS PASTOR, ELDERS, AND CONGREGATION CELEBRATE TWO HUNDRED YEARS OF SERVICE AND COMMITMENT TO THE WORK OF GOD.

Whereas, Midway Presbyterian Church was established in 1801 under a bush arbor at a point on the Black River approximately fifteen miles northwest of the Town of Kingstree in Williamsburg County by Scotch Irish immigrants who sought to organize a Presbyterian church at the midway point between two established Presbyterian congregations in the area; and

Whereas, Reverend G. G. McWhorter served as pastor from 1801 to 1809, and under his leadership, the church’s first sanctuary was completed in 1802 at a cost of one hundred eighty dollars; and

Whereas, during a congregational meeting shortly after the sanctuary was completed, the name Midway was given to the new church because the church and its members were located at the midway point between Williamsburg and Salem Back River; and

Whereas, Midway was officially organized in 1804 with John Witherspoon, Sr., Archibald Knox, and John Witherspoon, Jr. serving as its first elders; and

Whereas, in 1850 the church’s present structure was built at a cost of one thousand five hundred dollars under the leadership of Pastor Philip Pearson; and

Whereas, under the leadership of Pastor Rodney Foster and Elders Linda E. Swain, Hilma Mcallister, Betty P. Cantey, Rickey Harrington, Mary Eppie Baylor, and Thomas F. Epps, the congregation of Midway Presbyterian Church begin their third century with a rich legacy of service to God and humanity; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, would like to recognize the Midway Presbyterian Church and its congregation for their faith and Christian service and devotion as they celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of this special House of God. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina recognize Midway Presbyterian Church located in Williamsburg County as its pastor, elders, and congregation celebrate two hundred years of service and commitment to the work of God.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Midway Presbyterian Church.
