A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND RECOGNIZE THE MEMBERS OF THE 2001 CITY OF COLUMBIA UNITED STATES YOUTH GAMES TEAM FOR CAPTURING THREE GOLD MEDALS, THREE SILVER MEDALS, AND THREE BRONZE MEDALS DURING THE 2001 INVITATIONAL YOUTH GAMES HELD IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.

Whereas, the United States Youth Games is a program of competitive athletic events designed to give youngsters from nine years of age to fifteen years of age planned, supervised, and meaningful recreational experiences during the summer months; and

Whereas, the program also offers its participants exceptional enrichment experiences, national media exposure, and promotes citizenship; and

Whereas, the United States Youth Games began in 1966 in New York City. Today, United States Youth Games competitions have spread throughout the country; and

Whereas, in 1981, Mr. Leroy Blakely organized the City of Columbia’s participation in its first United States Youth Games competition; and

Whereas, the ninety member Columbia team successfully competed in the 2001 Invitational Youth Games from August 1, 2001 to August 5, 2001, in Birmingham, Alabama, in events that included basketball, bowling, golf, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and academics; and

Whereas, during this competition, the Columbia team captured: Gold Medals in the Academic Bowl, Girls Bowling, and Boys Golf; Silver Medals in Boys Bowling, Girls Golf, and Volleyball; and Bronze Medals in Girls Basketball, Boys Track, and Girls Track; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations to recognize the exceptional accomplishments of the 2001 City of Columbia United States Youth Games Team. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate and recognize the members of the 2001 City of Columbia United States Youth Games Team for capturing three Gold Medals, three Silver Medals, and three Bronze Medals during the 2001 Invitational Youth Games held in Birmingham, Alabama.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be presented to Mr. James C. Brown and Mr. Oliver Washington, Jr. on behalf of the 2001 City of Columbia United States Youth Games Team.
