A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE DEEP AND PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF THE CHAPLAIN OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE REVEREND DR. ALTON C. CLARK, AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the Reverend Dr. Alton Claud Clark, beloved Chaplain of the House of Representatives passed away on March 24, 2001; and

Whereas, Pastor Clark was born on November 14, 1911, in Little Mountain, the son of the late Henry Claud and Mattie Shealy Clark. He was a graduate of Newberry College and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary; and

Whereas, Pastor Clark was elected Chaplain of the House of Representatives in 1965 and served continuously until the time of his death. The Governor awarded Pastor Clark the Order of the Palmetto in the spring of 2000; and

Whereas, before coming to his service with the House of Representatives, Pastor Clark served several churches. He was the pastor-developer of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Anderson from 1935 to 1958. He served the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbia from 1958 until 1975. In his retirement he served as interim pastor of Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Prosperity for eighteen years. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pomaria; and

Whereas, Pastor Clark also served as Chaplain of the South Carolina Army National Guard after retiring from the Guard and was part-time chaplain of the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School from 1975 through 1981; and

Whereas, Reverend Dr. Clark has left behind his own family and an extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-four years, Alice Warner Clark. Their sons and daughters-in-law are Pastor Marion W. and Edith R. Clark of Spartanburg and Henry C. and Bobbi P. Clark of Prosperity. His surviving sister is Miriam Clark Willingham of Newberry. A second sister, Thelma Clark Derrick of Walhalla, predeceased Reverend Dr. Clark. There are four grandchildren, two great-grandsons and two step great-grandsons; and

He practiced Christianity on a day-by-day basis in the House Chamber and in the Blatt Building. His prayers encouraged, inspired, and challenged the representatives to maintain proper perspective about their important work. His smiles and greetings to everyone he met started a person’s day off in a spirit of optimism which was an essential part of the Reverend’s ministry; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly will fondly remember Reverend Dr. Clark as a man deeply admired for his devoted service and commitment to Christianity. He will be truly missed by his extended family. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
