20.1: Annual Rainfall Scenario during 2010

Rainfall in 2010 (January – December)

In 2010, the annual rainfall over the country as a whole was 101% of Long Period Average (LPA). Out of 36 meteorological subdivisions, 10 received excess rainfall, 20 received normal rainfall and 06 received deficient rainfall. Season wise rainfall distribution over the country as a whole was as follows:

Winter (January to February 2010):56% of LPA

Pre-monsoon (March to May 2010):92% of LPA

Monsoon (June to September 2010):102% of LPA

Post-Monsoon (Oct. to Dec. 2010):121% of LPA

Winter Season (January – February 2010)

During the winter season rainfall activity over the country as a whole remained generally subdued recording 56% of the LPA rainfall. At sub-division level,08subdivisionreceived excess rainfall, 4 Subdivisions received normal rainfall,08 received deficient and 16 received scanty rainfall.

Pre-Monsoon Season (March – May 2010)

Rainfall activity during the Pre-monsoon season over the country as a whole was normal with 92% of LPA rainfall. Out of 36 meteorological subdivisions, 4 received excess rainfall, 11 received normal rainfall, 08 received deficient rainfall,12 received scanty rainfall and no rain in one met sub-division.

Monsoon Season (June – September 2010)

Monsoon season witnessed normal rainfall in over the country as a whole. During the season for the country as a whole, rainfall was 102% of its Long Period Average (LPA) value. Seasonal rainfall was 112% of its LPA over Northwest India, 104% of its LPA over Central India, 118% of its LPA over south Peninsula and 82 % of its LPA over East and Northeast (NE) India. At met sub-division level, 13 subdivisions received excess rainfall, 18 subdivisions received normal rainfall and remaining 05 sub-divisions received deficient rainfall. Excess / normal rainfall sub-divisions covered 69% of the geographical area of the country. Out of 597 districts for which rainfall data were available, 173 districts (29%) received excess rainfall, 240 districts (40%) normal rainfall, 173 districts (29%) deficient rainfall and 11 districts (2%) received scanty rainfall.

Post-Monsoon Season (October – December 2010)

During the post-monsoon country received good rainfall with 121% of LPA. Out of 36 meteorological subdivisions 18subdivisions received excess rainfall, 06 Subdivisions received normal rainfall, 05 received deficient rainfall and 07 received scanty rainfall. Northeast monsoon seasonal rainfall over South Peninsula was 153% of its LPA. Rainfall in 5 Met-subdivisions covered by North-east monsoon was Coastal Andhra Pradesh (176%), Rayalseema (130%), Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry (141%), South Interior Karnataka (166%) and Kerala (167%) of its LPA.
