Classwork #23:
The Answers of Confucius:
Respect, Humility, and Role-Models
Ancient China During the Time of Confucius:
Confucius was born around 551 BCE in Qufu (an area in eastern China not too far from the East China Sea). Confucius grew up during a time of frequent wars. Powerful warlords competed for control of different parts of ancient China. The rulers of China were often corrupt and rarely had the best interests of their people at heart. Confucius, a deep thinker and writer, was determined to create a government in which rulers would be just and help teach people how to be good. His teachings and sayings are recorded in a book known as the Anal ects. For thousands of years, Chinese rulers and government officials studied the words of Confucius in the Analects.
Confucius and the Golden Rule
The core of the teachings of Confucius is what we today call the Golden Rule: “treat others as you wish to be treated.” Confucius believed that everyone should have a deep concern for the wellbeing of others. He called this concern for others ren. He further taught that the best way to show this concern for others was to put the needs of others before your own. In other words, Confucius wanted his followers to care for the needs of others before they cared for their own needs. Confucius wanted all of his followers to show humility to others. The “good person” was someone who never showed off or bragged. The “good person” spoke simply and always strove to help others.
Confucian Relationships:
Confucius believed that the best way to show this humility and this concern for others was within the context of specific relationships. The Analects explain that there are five specific relationships in society: ruler to subject, husband to wife, parent to child, older person to younger person, and sibling to sibling. In each of these relationships, the first person was always considered above or superior to the other. This strict set of relationships is called a hierarchy. It was the job of the younger person to respect and follow the older person. It was the job of the older person to teach the younger person and lead by example. Confucius believed that an entire society will eventually become just (“good”) if led by a just ruler: “The moral character of the ruler is the wind,” Confucius wrote. “The moral character of those beneath him is the grass. When the wind blows, the grass bends.”
Confucius and Education:
Education was central to the teachings of Confucius. Real knowledge, according to the philosopher, could only be obtained after careful, diligent study. The job of the student was to imit ate the teacher and learn from their example. Confucius accepted students of any background (rich or poor) provided that they were willing to work hard. The true leader, Confucius believed, is one who has studied carefully and followed the example set forth by that person’s superiors (parents, teachers, etc…).
