Charles’ Law Lab 1

Charles’ Law Lab

Introduction:

1.  According to the kinetic molecular theory of gases (KMT), the average kinetic energy of a gas molecule is proportional to Kelvin temperature. / What is kinetic energy?
Why Kelvin Temperature and not Celsius?
2.  What does directly proportional mean? (AKA proportional)
As one variable increases the other variable ______. / Graph 1: Proportional

Temperature
3.  What does inversely proportional mean?
As one variable increases the other variable ______. / Graph 2: Inversely Proportional

Pressure
4.  Ideal Gases
5.  Expansion
6.  Units of Volume / Units of measurement:
Liters (____)
Milliliters (____)
Cubic centimeters (____)
Conversions
1 L = ______mL
1 mL = _____ cm3
7.  Temperature / 1.  Celsius (_____)
2.  Kelvin (______)
3.  Conversions
4.  Celsius = ______- 273
5.  Kelvin = ______+ 273
8. Charles’ Law / ______and ______are
______proportional
Formula ______
T = ______
V = ______
1 = ______
2 = ______

Lab Procedure:

1.  Heat a beaker full of water to 90oC. Beaker must be large enough to immerse completely the syringe barrel.

2.  Draw 30 cc of air into the syringe and cap the end.

3.  Place the syringe and the thermometer into the water using the provided bock of wood as a support. The thermometer fits in the smaller hole.

4.  Allow 3-5 minutes for equilibration.

5.  Record the volume in the syringe as well as the temperature.

6.  To get accurate volume measurement, push on the piston and then release it. Record the volume. Then pull back the piston and release it. Record this second volume and average the two volumes.

7.  Allow the water to cool and take successive volume and temperature readings every 10oC. To speed cooling you can add ice to the beaker when the temperature is below 35oC or so.

Data Table 1: ______ (create title)

Initial measurements / Be sure to include units of measure
Water temperature
Initial volume measurement
Verifying volume measurement
Average of two measurements

Data Table 2 ______(create title)

Reading / Temperature (oC) / Temperature (K) / Volume (cc)
Average of initial readings (copy from Data Table 1)

Exit Ticket: Plot volume (cc) versus temperature (K). You should get a straight line.
