Planet Report/Model

Your task is to write a five-paragraph report on the planet you have picked in our solar system. You have almost 2 weeks to complete the written portion of your report.Your written report is due on Friday, September 14, 2012 and is worth 25 points. The following information must be included in your planet report. You may type or write your report. You will then need to place your finished paper into a decorated folder (I will provide you with that folder) with your name and the title –The Planet ______. You may also need to use more sources, other than your book, to find this information.

Planet Report Outline

1st Paragraph: Introduction and Topic Sentence

*Which planet are you reporting on?

*What number planet is it in the solar system?

*When was your planet discovered?

*Can your planet be seen from Earth? What time of Year?

2nd Paragraph: Characteristics

*What size is your planet? What is the diameter (in miles)?

*What color(s) is your planet?

*What is the surface of the planet like?

*What is the temperature of your planet?

*What is the atmosphere of your planet like? What gases is the atmosphere made of?

3rd Paragraph: Comparing your planet to Earth

*How far is your planet from Earth?

*How long would it take someone to get to your planet?

*How long is your planet’s year? Meaning- How long does it take to revolve around the sun?

*What is the length of day on your planet? Earth has 24 hours in one day.

*Does your planet have any moons? How many? What are their names?

4th Paragraph: Other Cool Facts

*Does your planet have any cool features other planets do not have (rings, volcanoes, asteroids around it)?

*Has anyone ever been to your planet? Have any orbs or satellites been there?

*Are there any other cool facts that you haven’t told your readers that we have to know?

5th Paragraph: Conclusion- Just like your introduction, but worded a little differently. Remember- this is where you stop talking about your planet and wrap things up. Don’t introduce any new ideas.

Planet Model

The second portion of your planet report is to build some visual model of your planet to share with the class. Here are the guidelines for you to follow.

1. Get creative! No store bought kits. Draw a picture, Paper Mache a planet, make it out of wood, paint a rock, use some duct take and paper, bake a planet cake. The sky’s the limit. You CAN use Styrofoam Balls just don’t buy the whole kit. It doesn’t, and shouldn’t, have to cost a lot of money and you should do most of the work- not your parents.

2. Be sure to include the details of your planet. Moons, rings, comets, and asteroids should all be a part of your planet if it has them. Don’t forget correct coloring as well.

3. Make it as eye catching as possible. Remember your creativity counts. Amaze your classmates when you present your planet!

This is also due Friday, September 10, 2012. It is worth 25 points as well.
