A. Participation:Participation is vital to learning a second language. The student’s total number of participation points will be calculated at the end of each unit, and a score will be given based on the number of times the student has participated. The teacher will offer many other opportunities to gain participation points such as:

1) Speaking in Class: Speaking is essential to learning a language. Students are expected to participate in class multiple times each day. Each time a student volunteers/gives a response in class they will receive participation points tallied by the teacher.

2) Homework: Homework is also figured into the Participation Grade. Completed homework results in 10 additional participation points. Students are expected to complete all homework assignments on time. Late work will generally not be accepted. For assignments that are to be reviewed and/or discussed in class no exceptions are made. For assignments that the teacher will collect and grade before returning, sometimes exceptions can be made; but the lateness will be reflected in a lowered grade.

B. Attendance: Attendance is essential for Spanish language learning. Students with the proper documentation following an absence will be given the opportunity to make up work.

C. Make-up Work: Students are permitted to make up work after an absence, provided they supply proper documentation. According to school/district policy students must make up missed work within five (5) days of returning. Students are expected to coordinate with the teacher to make up any missed work.

D. Retakes: Students must retake any major quiz on which they scored lower than a 70. The student is responsible for scheduling a review session with the teacher and the retake day and time. The retake must be within one week of the quarter in which the quiz is given.

E. Extra Help: Students are encouraged to seek extra help from the teacher especially after an absence or when something is unclear. Extra help is available before and after school, and during lunch when previously scheduled by the student.

F. Twitter: Student can follow tweets of Spanish speakers, Señor Poore, and receive class updates through following Señor Poore. This is not required.

G. Class Rules and Consequences

1) Students will observe all the school codes of conduct in the classroom. (see the Student Handbook for a complete listing of codes).

2) Show respect to each other, the teacher, and school property.

3) Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings.

4) Bring all materials to class.

5) Follow directions the first time they are given.

H. Classroom Procedures

1) Entering the class:

a) Students should enter the class with the proper attitude and materials to begin the instruction period.

b) As they enter, students should personally greet the teacher with a handshake and the appropriate greeting, i.e.: The Spanish equivalent of “Good morning”, or “Good afternoon.”

c) Students should then proceed to their assigned seat, place their homework visibly on their desk, and begin the starting activity, “Empiécelo.”

d) Students should not be out of their seats without permission. Students should raise their hand to receive permission.

2) Homework

a) As students settle into their desks, they should place the current day’s homework on their desk so as to be visible for the teacher.

b) The teacher will check for completion of homework, and then review it in class. Some work will be turned in for grading.

3) Make-up work

a) The day the student returns to class, the student should check with the teacher for any make up work. It is the student’s responsibility to check with a classmate for any missed class notes.

b) The student will make up any missed assignment(s) within one week of returning to class.

4) Major Quiz re-takes

It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a review session and a day to take the test.

5) Projects

Students should expect one project per quarter. These projects will be assigned with plenty of time to complete them. The teacher will contact the parents if a project is turned in late. The highest grade a project may receive after the due date is a 70. You will be given one week after the project is due to turn it in. After one week, the student will be assigned the after school program to complete the project.

5) Class Participation

a) The student must raise his or her hand and be called on to speak.

b) During the first several days of class when called upon, the student must first state his or her name, last name first, and then give the response.

6) Permission to use the restroom

The student must wait for an appropriate time to ask to use the restroom, and only in case of emergency. An appropriate time is when the students are working quietly at their desks.
