TEAM ENTRY Entrants may enter the competition as a team of two or more participants.

In the event of a team winner, the appropriate prize will be given to the captain of the team to be divided among those forming the team. Teams of two, with both students sharing responsibilities, are encouraged.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Your objective is to design a functional and aesthetically pleasing pool house, incorporating the above grade concrete (i.e., ICF – Insulated Concrete Form) system into the structure. The pool house should be designed for the purpose of accommodating a middle aged couple and their two children, a 13 year old female and a 16 year old male, who plan to build in the Cleveland area. The family intends to build on a minimal footprint part of their existing lot, incorporating “smart” and “green” technology, and have amenities such as indoor shelter, bathrooms, kitchenette, and other features that would be utilized when entertaining friends and relatives. The pool house should reflect the colonial style architecture of the adjacent and existing residential house. The project is budgeted at a maximum of $165,000. “Green Building/Construction Technology” (including LEED and Energy Conservation Standards) INNOVATIONS and CREATIVITY are strongly encouraged.

NOTE: Under the title on your presentation board, in 150 words or less, please include a design statement that describe the main features of the pool house and list the green building practices that you utilized.

Conditions of the house: 1. Living area indoor, but not including basement: 1500 square feet.

Note: Construction of average quality in our area is approximately $110/sq.ft.

2. Foundation and/or above grade walls must be insulated concrete forms (I.C.F.) or

concrete masonry units (concrete blocks) and must meet the "Energy Conservation

Standards” listed in instructions. Green Building/Technology features are encouraged.

3. Great room or central living area; separate bathrooms, and kitchenette.

4. Interior and Exterior as maintenance-free as possible.

5. Pool House architecture reflects the colonial style of the existing residential house.

5. Optional: A full or partial basement under the pool house for storage or future use.

6. The height of the pool house should not exceed 2 stories.

SITE PLAN The drawing of the building site will be emailed w/the info packet. Please refer to it for lot

dimensions, setbacks, and other information. The pool house must be contained within setbacks.

JUDGING Drawings and models will be judged by a panel appointed by the Student Model Home Design Contest Committee. Judges’ decisions are final.

The Following Items will Be Judged:

1.   Program Requirements - The extent that the entry meets the following contest rules:

A. Meets Program Descriptions

B. Meets Site Descriptions

C. Completed Materials Description List

D. Completed Scale Model as described in #5 Model Presentation

2. Design, Planning, & Innovations - The suitability of design with respect to generally accepted good planning requirements, traffic patterns and access, “smart” and “green” technology, and innovative ideas incorporated into the design of the Pool House.

3.  Energy Conserving Features - The entry will be judged based on considerations for energy efficiency, energy efficient heating/cooling systems, quality insulation materials, and proper installation techniques. Must meet "Energy Conservation Standards". LEED, smart/green building and construction technology features are encouraged.

4. Drawing Presentation (basic architectural set) - Judging will be

based on a comprehensive set of technical drawing criteria.

Drawings of each floor, all elevations, a site plan, as well as a wall section drawing will be submitted. A foundation plan will be required showing excavated and unexcavated areas. The order of the drawings shall be as follows:

A. Site Plan: 1” = 10’ scale (or as noted on plans) B. Elevations showing exterior materials – ¼” scale

C. Exterior Wall Section - ½” scale; Show Insulation Components and label materials.

D. Foundation Plan – ¼” scale

E. Floor Plans (one drawing for each floor) - Label rooms & dimension room sizes – ¼” scale

F. Materials List (attached to “face” side of mat board - see “Scales of Drawing & Model" section on next page)

NOTE: Any extra drawings must be stapled as a separate set!

See “FAQ” page for further details.

5. Model Presentation - Judging will be based on the accuracy of the construction with respect to the drawings, detail, craftsmanship, and appeal. Minimal landscaping details on the model will be permitted! Materials for the model may be matt board, museum board, chip board, or foam core. Appropriate embellishments of the model will be permitted for enhancement and to represent materials more accurately. It is highly recommended that the model base be constructed of foam core.

6. Exterior Design - Judging will be based on the suitability of the materials

selected for the exterior in relation to the maintenance free design.

SCORES Judges will score every entry in each of several categories. The total score will be indicated based on the number of points accumulated in these categories.

The “Energy Conservation Standards” should be met. Note: Also, refer to “LEED” standards to incorporate into the pool house.

PRESENTATION OF DRAWINGS

This relates to the overall plans themselves including layout, neatness, printing, proper drafting & CAD techniques, and the required plans which are: Floor plans for each floor, all elevations, site plan, wall section plan, and foundation plan. Any extra plans or cross sections that relate to the design or explain a unique feature or construction method will be considered and will usually help a student. Attention CAD Students - Computer aided design drawings/illustrations are encouraged.
