General Information

Babe Ruth Manager’s Book

It is our hope that you, as Managers, will take the time to read this information. Please note any information you think should be included and send it to the League Secretary.

Cal Ripken is the designation that includes all Divisions (ages 6-12 – this division was also previously referred to as Bambino). Babe Ruth refers to Prep (13 yr olds) and Babe Ruth Divisions (ages 14-15 year olds.)

RAINY DAYS

Weather is always a concern for baseball. On days of questionable weather Managers will call their Division Director by 3:00 PMfor Rainy Day Instruction. It is the Manager’s responsibility to notify all parents. This responsibility is NOT to be delegated to a parent! In order not to forfeit a game (if the game has not been postponed or canceled), on a scheduled game day, your team will need to show up at the field, even if it is pouring. Any time your team shows for a game, a scorecard needs to be filled out with the game statistics or the team names, date, place, time, and that the game was rained-out, etc. This scorecard needs to be signed by the umpire. Please see your Division Roster Sheet in your Manager’s Handbook for your Division Director’s Contact Number.

GAME RESCHEDULING

We make every attempt to reschedule rainouts but at times it is not possible. All games that effect final standings may be made up. Your Division Director or Player Agent will notify you of rescheduled dates, times, and locations.

PLAYER DROPS

It is very important that player drops are reported to the league as soon as possible. Please notify yourPlayer Agent or Division Director immediately. We normally have a waiting list for each division and would like to give these waiting players a chance to play as much baseball as possible.

PLAYER INJURY

If a player is injured during a game or practice, contact the player’s parent and ensure that the player has proper medical attention. In addition, anaccidentreportmustbefiledwiththeleagueregistrarassoonaspossible. Two accident report forms are provided with your Manager’s book. Please notify the League registrar if you need more forms.

TEAM ORGANIZATION

The following is a list of positions you will want to fill as soon as possible.

1.COACH/ASSISTANT COACH - Each manager is allowed one (1) declared coach. You may declare a coach by contacting your Division Director to fill out a declare form. Declare forms are due no later than 5:00 p.m. the day before the review. Once this form is completed, your declared coach’s child will automatically be assigned to your team. Your assistant coach (es) will be recruited once your team has been selectedeither by draft or draw. You can check on the player’s application to see which one of your player’s parents are interested in helpingand choosefrom there. A coach and an assistant coach are very important in the managing of a team. Once you have them chosen, it is your responsibility to make sure that they, as well as any other individual helping at practice with the players, become Association Members by filling out one of the Coach Applications that have been included in your Manager’s book packet, and paying their fee and completing the coaching certification.

2.SCOREKEEPERS - You need to recruit official scorekeepers for your team and attend, with them,

the scorekeeper’s clinic. You will be held responsible for whatever your scorekeepers enter in your scorebook. You all must understand the rules. A back up scorekeeper might seem unnecessary but, considering that you MUST have a scorekeeper at every game, you should try to recruit at least one and also bring them to the scorekeeper’s clinic. Included in your Manager book packet are two (2) letters addressed to your scorekeepers. Please, make sure to give these to the parents you plan to have doing your scorekeeping. These are invitations to the scorekeeper’s clinic. We will not be giving out the score books until the clinic, so you need to make sure to have someone there.

3.TEAM PARENT - A team parent can be very helpful. You can have them make up a roster for your team members. Team Parents set up refreshment schedules, and help you with calling players ifpractice, game times or location should ever change. We encourage you not to try to take on these duties yourself when you can very easily get help from one of your parents. When your parents are involved in the running of the team you can get a better feeling of unity. Included in your Manager book packet is a sample letter addressed to your team parent.

4.BANNER PARENT - Your Banner Parent will be responsible for putting up, taking down, and storing your team banner for each game of your season. It is vitally important that your banner be displayed at EVERY GAME.

5.SNACK BAR/CONCESSION –Each team will be scheduled to work in the snack bar and the manager must make sure that the team’s parents are present on their assigned dates and times.

COMMUNICATION IS IMPORTANT!

It is very important for you to communicate with your player’s parents. If you let the parents know up front what you expect from them and why, you can have a very smooth season. An initial parent meeting before your first practice is suggested. The following items are a few points you will want to cover.

PRACTICE / GAME SCHEDULE –

  1. Let your parents know where they need to be and when. Make a standard time to be at a game (i.e. 30 minutes before game time) to eliminate confusion from week to week.
  2. Explain to the parents that you need to account for every player on your team at every practice and game to make them understand the importance of calling you if their child will not be attending.
  3. Make sure that they have your telephone number as well as the telephone numbers of your coaches. It is highly recommended that you give them a copy of the Team Roster for their use; it could help with transportation and communication.

You do not need to compose a formal letter to your player’s parents. However, please make sure to have a parent/player meeting in order to let your team know the rules and practice schedule, phone numbers, etc. We cannot stress enough that Communicationisimportant! Although a formal letter is not required, handing them information to read and take with them, especially refrigerator art (something they can stick to their refrigerator with a magnet), will do nothing but aid you in your job as manager. Use your Team Parent to help with the communication.

TEAM STANDINGS / GAME SCORE CARDS

In order to be on top of each division’s game's score and to get them correctly published in the Clovis Independent and web site in a timely manner, the following policy is in effect.

It is the responsibility of the winning team to post the score on the league website, within 24 hours of the game. Not doing so will constitute a forfeit. The win will not be awarded to the losing team; however, they will still have a loss recorded. The website is Do not call the scores in.

After the home team “official” scorekeeper completely fills out the scorecard and it is signed by the game umpires, each umpire takes one of the top two copies (if your game only has one umpire, the umpire receives the top copy. In this case, please make a note that only one umpire was at the game. Rookie games only have one umpire assigned so no note will be necessary.) The remaining two copies go to the game managers. This is especially important for the managers in the Major Division, as this scorecard is the manager’s proof of pitching that he must show at his following game, if requested by the umpire or opposing team manager. (See pitching rules for details.)

LOCK BOXES – Bases, Cones, Shovels, Rakes and Score Books.

The league has lock boxes at the playing fields to store bases, shovels, rakes and official score books. You will be issued a key when you pick up your equipment. Thehometeamsetsoutthebases, conesand returnsthem after the game. Please lock the boxafter you removethe items that you need, neverleave the lidstanding openor the locks left unlooked. Pleaseremember to returntheofficial score bookto the lockbox after each game. If you lose your key, you can get another from the league for $10.00 (please contact the Equipment Director). At the end of the season, be sure to turn in your key along with your equipment. THERE IS A $10.00 CHARGE IF YOUR KEY IS NOT TURNED IN AT THAT TIME.

Field Maintenance

For the safety of the players and in respect for the ClovisUnifiedSchool District and City of Clovis, whom without the use of their fields our league would not be possible, please take the time to prepare and take care of our fields. The home team is responsible for field maintenance, however, it is required that both teams help in the preparation and clean up of the fields. Make sure that all mounds are raked before and after the game, so that they will be functional for your next game and the next team’s to play. Also please ensure that all trash is picked up after the game -- keeping the environment clean and neat is everyone's responsibility. Let’s keep our fields clean and well maintained.

Do not forget to replace all equipment in the metal, league boxes by the field. Managers who are negligent and lose Field Maintenance equipment will be held responsible and asked to replace the equipment two times the cost.

League Boundaries

Our league serves the youth that live within the boundaries established by the District Babe Ruth Commissioner. When you are chartered with Babe Ruth, the question of your eligibility to play is not based on what school the player attends but where the player lives. Our Cal Ripken Division Boundaries include the area within the Clovis High attendance area, the Clovis East attendance area, the TarpeySchool attendance area, and the area between the Clovis East attendance area and Academy Avenue; a map of the Cal Ripken Boundary is available on the league’s website. Our Clovis Babe Ruth Boundaries include all players living within the ClovisUnifiedSchool District boundaries for ClovisHigh School and ClovisEastHigh School. The map of that area can be found at A player playing illegally in our league could result in our disqualification from post-season tournament play. The league has gone to great lengths to confirm that all players are legal but it would be a great help if you could please take a few minutes and check the addresses of your players for compliance within the boundary. There is no grandfather clause covering players playing in our league illegally. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the League Registrar or Vice President. The Clovis Babe Ruth Board of Directors may ask for a PG&E bill, or other form of identification, in order to prove any residence in question.
