Aluminium Ladders / OK?
Check for distortion along the stiles.
Check for tightness of rungs.
Check extension fittings for security and serviceability.
Check all rivets and fastenings.
Check for corrosion.
Check for and remove any sharp edges on stiles and rungs.
Check anti-slip end pieces are in good condition and are not loose.
Check visually for flaws and cracks.
Check non-slip bases for damage or wear.
Aluminium ladders must be clearly marked:
‘NOT TO BE USED NEAR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT OR SUPPLY’.

Wooden Ladders / OK?
Check rungs or treads are not decaying, missing, loose or short-grained?
Check rungs or treads do not solely rely for support upon nails, spikes or similar fixings.
Check tie-rods are secure.
Check stiles are free from defect (e.g. cracks and splits).
Check that wooden ladders are not painted as this may hide defects (clear varnish is OK).
Check ladder is free from any signs of warping.
Check non-slip bases are not be damaged or worn.

Step Ladders / OK?
Check stepladders are not wobbly when positioned as this demonstrates side strain.
Check hinge brackets/spreaders are not loose or bent.
Check stop on the hinge bracket/spreaders is not broken and is fully effective.
Check hinges are not loose.
Anything else to note:
Footstools/Elephant’s Feet/Step Stools / OK?
Is the body of the Footstool/Elephants foot in good condition?
Is the step anti slip covering material present and undamaged?
Are the wheels undamaged and in good working order?
Do the wheels retract correctly when weight is applied to the step?

Are all parts of the main steel framework free from bends, twists, breaks, splits, corrosion and other damage?
Are all welded joints in good order?
Are all bolts present and securely fixed?
Are all removable bracings present, securely fixed and free from bends and other damage?
Are all handrails present, securely fixed and free from bends and other damage?
Lever System - is the Central Lever Braking System in full working order, immobilising the step correctly when in use?
Plunger System - Do all plunger castors retract fully so that all legs impact on the floor?
Are all steel / rubber feet present and free from damage?
Are all treads present, securely fixed, free from damage and accessible to the top platform?
Is the paintwork clean and free from grease, oil and other chemicals?
Is the paintwork in good general order and free from excessive corrosion?
