Title / Comply with aseptic sampling techniques in a dairy processing operation

Purpose / This entry-level unit standard is for people carrying out sampling functions in a dairy processing operation.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of aseptic sampling techniques,and take an aseptic sample relevant to the individual’s work area, in a dairy processing operation.

Explanatory notes

1Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Animal Products Act 1999, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and Animal Products (Dairy) Regulations 2005.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic sampling techniques in a dairy processing operation.

Evidence requirements

1.1The importance of aseptic sampling is identified and described in terms of the consequences of sample contamination.

1.2Sources of possible sample contamination are identified and described in terms of their effect on the sample.

Rangesources may include but are not limited to – environment, product or material, sampling tools, sample container, person taking the sample;

evidence is required of two sources.

1.3The importance of sample storage is described in terms of the prevention of microbial growth or sample deterioration.

Outcome 2

Take aseptic samples relevant to the individual’s work area in a dairy processing operation.

Evidence requirements

2.1The procedure for taking, labelling and storing aseptic samples is followed in accordance withorganisational requirements.

2.2Any contaminated samples or samples showing signs of contamination are identified and reported in accordance with organisational requirements.
