1984 Essay Assignment

Instructions: You are to choose one of the topics listed and write a well-organized five paragraph, analytical essay.

1. It is vitally important to the inner party that the people of Oceania be kept in a perpetual state of paranoia. Discuss how the party slogans “War is Peace”, “Freedom is Slavery”, and “Ignorance is Strength”, help maintain this state of paranoia amongst the people of Oceania.

2. In 1984 Winston states, “If you can feel that staying human is worth while, even when it can’t have any results whatever, you’ve beaten them”.Winston, attempts to “stay human” in the face of a dehumanizing, totalitarian regime. What, according to Orwell, does it mean to be human?

3. The inner party does not have clearly stated laws or rules; however, they do have definite punishments for actions taken against the party. What are the advantages for this type of government.

4. During Winston’s stay in the Ministry of Love, O’Brien asks Winston, “How does one man exert his power over another” to which Winston replies, “By making him suffer”. Explain how The Party is able to maintain control and power over it’s citizens (proles and party members alike) by making them suffer. Cite examples from the text to support your answer.
