1936 Dorset. Lives and works in West Sussex -

Michael Sandle was born in Weymouth, Dorset, in 1936. He studied at the Douglas I.O.M. School of Art and Technology and the Slade School of Fine Art. 1954 conscripted for National Service in the Royal Artillery. Michael Sandle has exhibited internationally and has undertaken many commissions which include the International Seafarer's Memorial and the Malta Siege Memorial. Themes of war, death, destruction, inhumanity and media manipulation are constant in his work, as he treads a path outside the fashionable mainstream. From 1961 he taught in Leicester and Coventry before moving to Canada in 1970 . From 1973 he lived and worked in Germany before retiring as a professor at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe and moving back to the UK in 1999 . .He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1989 - resigned 1997 rejoining 2004 and made fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1994.

He was awarded 1986 the Nobutaka Shikanei Prize in the ist Rodin Grand Prize Exhibition in Japan -1987 Major Award 7th International Small Sculpture Exhibition, Budapest- 1989 Major Korn Ferry Award RA Summer Exhibition – 1995 the Henry Hering Memorial Medal by the the National Sculpture Society of America for the architecture and sculpture of the Malta WW2 Siege Memorial which was erected 1992 at the entrance to the Grand Harbour in Valletta .

Michael Sandle has work in many Museums internationally including the Metropolitan in New York and the National Gallery of Australia ,
