PurposeThis unit standard is for people who are currently working, or who intend to work, in jobs which involve scanning barcode labels in a food and related products warehouse.
People credited with this unit standard are, within a food and related products warehouse, able to: describe the purpose of a scanning system; identify the components of a barcode label; describe the documentation requirements of stock transfer; handle a scanning gun; and scan product barcode labels for stock transactions.

Element 1
Describe the purpose of a scanning system in a food and related products warehouse.
Rangefour of – stocktaking, issue to plant, return from plant, validated order pick, goods transfer, received transfer, pallet labelling, adjustments.
Performance criteria
1.1The purpose of scanning is described in terms of the identification of the location of products.
1.2The purpose of scanning is described in terms of records of the transfer of products.
Element 2
Identify the components of a barcode label in a food and related products warehouse.
Rangeproduct code, lot number, serial number, weight, use by date.
Performance criteria
2.1The components of a barcode label are identified in terms of the information conveyed.
2.2The components of a barcode label are identified in terms of the position on the label.
Element 3
Describe the documentation requirements for stock transfer in a food and related products warehouse.
Rangemay include but is not limited to – batch numbers, scan sheet, stock movement docket.
Performance criteria
3.1The documentation requirements of stock transfer are described in terms of the functions of the documents.
3.2The documentation requirements of stock transfer are described in terms of the movements of the documents.
Element 4
Handle a scanning gun in a food and related products warehouse.
Rangebattery charge, damage avoidance, storage, laser safety, function changes.
Performance criteria
4.1The scanning gun is handled in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
4.2The scanning gun is handled in a manner which is consistent with the company safety policies and procedures.
Element 5
Scan product barcode labels for stock transactions in a food and related products warehouse.
Rangefour of – stocktaking, issue to plant, return from plant, validated order pick, goods transfer, received transfer, pallet labelling, adjustments.
Performance criteria
5.1Product barcode labels are scanned in accordance with company operating procedures.
5.2Product bar code label scanning is consistent with the stock transfer.
5.3Associated documentation is completed in accordance with company operating procedures.
Rangemay include but is not limited to – batch numbers, scan sheet, stock movement docket.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
