Purpose / This unit standard is for people in the cleaning industry.
People credited with this standard are able to: clean the interior of school buildings; and maintain security for the facility.

Explanatory notes

1Competence demonstrated during assessment against this standard must comply with the requirements of:

Employment Relations Act 2000;

Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992;

Resource Management Act 1991;

Smoke-Free Environments Act 1990;

Health and Safety Code of Practice for Schools, Ministry of Education, 2007.

2Equipment and cleaning agents must be used in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

3Definitions

Dustrol may also be called a static mop or dust mop. While the technical applications vary between each of these, the principles are the same. The purpose is to remove dust from the floor without creating dust showers.

Flat mop is a type of microfibre mop and can be used in a wet or dry condition.

Mop refers to either a string/cotton, sponge or microfibre type, or a flat mop.

Industry best practice refers to any enterprise and/or establishment requirements, practices, policy, procedures, methods and protocols which are in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations and New Zealand Standards.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Clean the interior of school buildings.

Evidence requirements

1.1Daily tasks are completed in accordance with facility schedule or duty list.

Rangemay include – toilets, corridors, standard classrooms, specialised classrooms, administration areas, library, gymnasium, hall, canteen.

Evidence of five is required.

1.2Weekly tasks and term tasks are completed in accordance with facility schedule or duty list.

1.3Warning signs are displayed in accordance with industry best practice.

Rangestudents, staff, parents, visitors, other cleaners.

At least one of – signs, barriers, cordons.

1.4Equipment is either selected individually or from single station equipment and is clean and in working condition.

Rangevacuum cleaner, colour coded cloths, buckets, scrubbing brush, toilet brush, mop, dustrol.

1.5Cleaning solutions are prepared in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

1.6Equipment and cleaning materials are cleaned, checked and stored in accordance with industry best practice.

Outcome 2

Maintain security for the facility.

Evidence requirements

2.1Buildings and rooms are opened as required in accordance with industry best practice.

2.2Buildings and rooms are locked as required in accordance with industry best practice.

2.3Services to buildings and rooms not in use are maintained in accordance with industry best practice.

Rangemay include – power, water, telephone.

2.4Alarm systems are operated in accordance with industry best practice.
