This weekly e-mail highlights interesting internship opportunities and other important information that will aid you in securing an internship! WELCOME BACK!!!

This fall semester will be full of great Career Center events, so save the dates on your calendar now. The Career Fair will be held September 23rd. On-Campus Recruiting begins September 13th. Internship Week will be held October 4th-8th. The fall Diversity Networking Mixer will be held on September 15th.

WALK-IN HOURS

The Internship Programs Office has daily walk-in hours, Monday through Friday from 9:00am-3:30pm. Stop by our office in STU B1 during our walk-in hours if you have a quick question about internships, connectSC or want to brainstorm workplace issues.

FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT MENTOR PROGRAM

Are you the first in your family to attend college? Would you like to enter into a mentorship with an alumnus who was also the first in their family to attend college? The Career Planning & Placement Center invites you to participate in our First Generation College Student Mentor Program. This program will provide “real world” exposure to the working world through a mentorship that focuses on professional and career development. Students will be paired with USC alumni who also are first generation college students. If you are interested in participating in this mentor program please download and complete an application at http://careers.usc.edu/students/internships/first-generation-college-student-mentor-program/. Completed applications must be turned in to the Career Planning & Placement Center Internship Programs office by 5:00 pm on September 17, 2010.

NEED COURSE CREDIT FOR AN UNPAID INTERNSHIP?

Federal labor law requires that students participating in an internship must either A) be paid by the employer; or, B) be enrolled in an internship for-credit course. Do you have an unpaid internship and need course credit? If so, register for one of USC’s 10+ internship courses. The Career Center instructs an internship course, MDA 250. F-1 international students participating in a paid internship are required to receive Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorization from OIS which requires enrolling in an internship course at USC. F-1 international students participating in an unpaid internship should contact OIS for more details regarding work authorization requirements.

COMPANY PROFILE EVENTS

During the academic semesters, we invite employers to conduct company presentations. We strongly recommend that you attend these information sessions to learn about different industries and organizations, as well as meet some of their key employees. §  San Gabriel Unified School District – Mock Trial Assistant Coach/Intern ($2,000-3,000 sitpend)

The San Gabriel Unified School District’s award-winning MOCK TRIAL Program has a COACHING/INTERNSHIP opportunity available immediately! This is an outstanding opportunity to work with the District’s four Middle School and High School teams as they prepare for and compete in the Constitutional Rights Foundation’s annual Los Angeles County Mock Trial competition. Intern must be a student with a strong academic background and an equally strong interest in law and the legal profession who has late afternoons and evenings free for the period late August through the end of November. Afternoon and evening availability is an absolute must! Mock Trial experience in high school (or college) is highly desirable but not essential, as is coaching or leadership experience, either in athletics or academic competition. What IS ABSOLUTELY essential is the desire and the ability to work closely with middle school and high school students in a hectic and high pressure environment, a highly developed work ethic and sense of responsibility, a good sense of humor, flexibility of schedule and almost unlimited patience. §  Morgan Stanley Smith Barney – Financial Advisor Assistant (2 Openings, $8/hr)

You will work with a team of financial advisors within Morgan Stanley Smith Barney's Downtown Los Angeles Office. Responsibilities will include cold calling, internet research, database management, client communications and preparing client and prospect proposals. We are looking for Juniors and Seniors at USC who would like to gain experience working in the financial services industry. Good phone skills for cold calling and client communications are the most important qualifications. Work schedule 8am-3pm, 2-3 days/week. Please email application to .

§  Viterbi Admission & Student Affairs – Engineering Admission Intern

We are looking for highly motivated Undergraduate Students to be Admission Interns in the Viterbi School of Engineering to help recruit the next class of engineering students. Admission Interns will support the VSoE Admission staff and learn about the college admission process by communicating with prospective students and families and helping to manage the recruitment process. The Admission Intern role includes but is not limited to assisting with college fairs and info sessions. Answering admission questions about USC and the Viterbi School. Mailing promotional information. Working at the Admission and Student Affairs front desk (RTH 110). Helping to develop publications and promotional material. Data entry. Managing heavy phone traffic. Interns will primarily work in the Admission and Student Affairs office. Some off-site recruiting events may be needed as well. USC Undergraduate student status required (majoring in Engineering preferred). Ability to work with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. §  SCRRA/METROLINK – Passenger Services Intern (2 Openings, $10/hr)

Support the Passenger Services Division with various projects. Students can work up to 1000 hours in a fiscal year (7.1.10- 6.30.11), receive a monthly transportation pass and earn $10/hr. Student must be an undergraduate or graduate studying Business Administration or a related field. Student must have knowledge of general office practices and procedures and be proficient with Microsoft Office including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database applications. Student will have the ability to organize work and handle multiple requests and priorities; a professional demeanor and good written/verbal communication skills is required. §  AIDS Research Alliance – Fund Development/Workplace Giving Intern

AIDS Research Alliance (ARA), a non-profit community-based medical research organization, is seeking candidates for the position of Fund Development/Workplace Giving Intern. Located in Los Angeles, CA, ARA exists to develop a cure for HIV/AIDS, medical modalities to prevent new infections, and better treatments for those living with HIV. ARA seeks a Fund Development (Fundraising) Intern to work approximately ten to fifteen (10-15) hours per week. A minimum four to six month commitment is required. This is a Federal Work-Study position. The Intern will report directly to the Vice President for Development and assist the department as it builds new linkages and relationships with local corporations. In particular, the Intern will work with staff to identify and introduce AIDS Research Alliance to new workplace giving (payroll deduction and matching gifts) programs. §  Dim Sum Truck – Events & Marketing Intern (stipend)

Dim sum got its roots from the ancient teahouses set up along the Silk Road to alleviate weary travelers. THE DIMSUM TRUCK now brings this tradition to our own modern-day urbanites by arriving to street corners around greater Los Angeles county with ample amounts of steamed shu mai and har gow dumplings, baked BBQ pork buns and even a few of our own creative concoctions, like the spicy black bean tofu mulita. Intern will assist in planning special events, such as catering on film shoots, corporate events, weddings, office parties & any other events. Respond to daily catering inquiries, work closely with owner for special event requests. Maintain relationships with clients. Represent the company at events such as VIP parties (for film studios and corporations) or large community food events. VIP Clients have included: NBC Universal, Fox Audience Network, Nike Corporate, Ben Silverman (TV producer & ex-chairman of NBC), Californication (TV show), NCIS:LA (TV show), Hawthorne (TV show). UNPAID INTERNSHIPS

§  Epiphany Channel.com – Intern

Assisting author and producer in the marketing/public relations/social media operations of a new book and website coming out in January with Random House/Crown Publishing. There also will probably be exposure and assistance in television and film development. The hours (5-10 hours/week) and dates are flexible but communication and a non-flake factor is very important. Must be well-versed in social media - Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, etc. Good writing, phone and social skills a must. Will be working with publicity department of major publishing company and other companies and offices. Creative, self-starter, organized, determined, punctual and serious about learning and contributing ideas and opinions. Would be nice if applicant is interested in books, film and television. §  City Year Los Angeles – Communications & Outreach Intern

City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors and role models, these diverse young leaders help children stay in school and on track, and transform schools and communities across the United States, as well as through international affiliates in Johannesburg, South Africa and London, England. City Year Los Angeles is currently looking for a dedicated intern who can connect service-minded students to City Year by creating and implementing campus-based marketing and publicity campaigns throughout the academic year. This position reports to the communications and recruitment departments. Intern will identify key characteristics of student leaders on college campuses. Research traditional and social media publicity opportunities. Develop strategies for on-campus recruitment initiatives. Execute an integrated marketing campaign to increase City Year brand awareness among college students. Connect student groups to service opportunities. Junior or Senior standing. Communications or Business major preferred. Strong interest in non-profit and/or education sector. Strong analytical, writing, and communications skills. Available to work 16-20 hours per week. §  Human Rights Watch – Student Task Force Intern

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is an international human rights monitoring and advocacy organization known for its in-depth investigations, its incisive and timely reporting, its innovative and high-profile advocacy campaigns, and its success in changing the human rights-related policies of influential governments and international institutions. Currently, the LA office has openings for a Student Task Force (STF) intern. Ideally, the selected candidate would begin immediately and continue until the end of the academic school year (mid-May). Based in LA, STF is a Human Rights Watch-sponsored youth leadership-training program that brings together high school students from all over Los Angeles and empowers them to advocate for the rights of children. HRW interns and STF teachers work in partnership to mentor students in leadership skills and activism, fostering confidence and maturity among students and enabling them to become effective voices for change and social justice within their communities. Each STF intern has many opportunities for substantive responsibility, which makes the STF internship a rewarding and uplifting learning experience. Responsibilities of the STF intern include, but are not limited to creating and organizing advocacy opportunities for the STF campaigns that focus on children rights issues. Maintaining ongoing relationships with local student leaders and faculty advisors and attending their STF meetings. Coordinating outreach events with participating STF high schools, student leaders, faculty advisors and like-minded organizations. Researching and implementing strategies and tools to equip students to be knowledgeable and effective human rights activists. Assisting with other office-related tasks, as assigned.
