I am an editor and journalist with more than 20 years editorial experience in newspapers and contract publishing. My career began in the fashion department of the Sunday Times colour supplement, followed by a move to the Evening Standard where I worked for more than 12 years. I started in the fashion department before moving to the features desk. In 1993, when ES magazine went weekly, I moved across to become the new shopping editor. I was promoted to associate editor and also wrote a weekly Suburban Girl column for two years (1997-1999). In 1999 I left ES to work in contract publishing and was the launch editor for Bluewater magazine, first published in December 2002, and edited the magazine until December 2008. During my career, I have also written freelance features and columns for various newspapers, magazines and contract magazines.

WORK HISTORY

2003-2007

Editor, Story Worldwide (formerly Just Communications)

Joined Just as editor of Bluewater magazine after the closure of Associated Newspapers contract publishing division. Since the first issue of Bluewater magazine, my editorial objectives have always been very clear and the magazine has reflected the premium retail and leisure destination. I have worked commercially and helped the advertising department where possible to achieve target revenue. I have had a great relationship with the three marketing directors and the team over the past six years and have worked closely with them to evolve the Bluewater brand. I believe that to be a good editor you must be truly passionate about the subject of the magazine, and I feel that my 20 years of experience in shopping, fashion and lifestyle journalism made me the ideal candidate for the role.

2000-2003

Associated Newspapers, Contract Publishing Division

Dee Nolan, editor of You Magazine, was heading up this new division and asked me to join the team as deputy editor on a glossy lifestyle magazine for Avon. I also worked on supplements with Emirates, in conjunction with the Evening Standard, edited two Christmas wine magazines for Waitrose and was responsible for heading the new business pitch for Bluewater. We won the account and I was the launch editor for Bluewater magazine in 2002.

1999-2000

Jori White Public Relations

I worked on pitches for new business and account handling for existing clients. I looked after the PR for restaurants, hotels and chefs. Because I had edited the restaurant pages on ES magazine, I had the advantage of being able to approach chefs and food and drink writers to gain maximum publicity for clients.

1996-1999

Associate editor, ES magazine

Commissioned, edited and evolved restaurant pages. I hired Ken Livingstone to write a weekly restaurant review, nurtured Charles Campion to become Glenfiddich restaurant writer of the year and introduced a style column by Nick Foulkes, ‘The Ginger Fop’.

I was responsible for overseeing the shopping and style pages; commissioning main features and writing them. I also set up interviews and launched the ES Interiors supplement in September 1998. For two years I wrote a weekly column about my life called Suburban Girl.

1995-1996

Lifestyle editor, ES magazine

Edited and commissioned the shopping, restaurant and beauty pages. Introduced a culinary agony column by Albert Roux and a ‘smokes’ column, as well as restaurant reviews by Fay Maschler and a wine column by Andrew Jefford. Commissioned main features and travel and was responsible for themed issues including Marbella and New York specials. I also worked on the opening spread in the magazine, Out and About – a topical London based photo-story, which I would cover with a photographer.

1993-1995
Shopping editor, ES magazine

Launched shopping pages from October 1993 when ES magazine went weekly. Came up with the concept for regular features including ‘Best of…’ which was later published as a book.

1991-1993
Deputy editor, London Life section, Evening Standard

The London Life section included Fay Maschler’s restaurant reviews, Andrew Jefford’s wine
column, lifestyle features and fashion stories. I helped to commission and edit the pages and wrote a weekly street fashion column and regular style features.

1986-1991
Fashion assistant, Evening Standard

Assistant to Iain R. Webb and then Caroline Kellett. Organised fashion shoots, called in clothes, booked models, went to the shows in London and occasionally Paris and Milan. Wrote a weekly fashion diary and street fashion column.
1983-1986
Fashion assistant, Sunday Times magazine

Assistant to Meriel McCooey. Organised fashion shoots, called in clothes, booked models and went on shoots. Researched fashion features including co-ordinating the annual ‘Best Dressed List…’
