Purpose

The National Certificate in Solid Wood Manufacturing (Advanced Technical Plant Operations) (Level 5) [Ref:1312] recognises the advanced skills and knowledge required of specialist trades people in Finger Jointing, Saw Doctoring, and Timber Machining to manage workshops, equipment maintenance systems, and solve technical operational problems.

The qualification comprises a compulsory core that recognises the competencies required to manage the maintenance of technical plants, and an elective to allow for the selection of specialist skills in either finger jointing, saw doctoring, or timber machining operations.

This qualification follows on from the National Certificate in Finger Jointing (Level 4) [Ref:1311], the National Certificate in Saw Doctoring (Level 4) [Ref: 0811], or the National Certificate in Timber Machining (Level 4) [Ref:0813], and may lead on to the National Diploma in Wood Manufacturing (Level 5) [Ref:1067].

Special Notes

It is recommended that candidates hold a current first aid certificate or are credited with the following first aid standards – Unit 6400, Manage first aid in emergency situations; Unit 6401, Provide first aid; and Unit 6402, Provide resuscitation level 2.

Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Transition Arrangements

Version 2

Version 2 was issued following review to include the option to specialise in saw doctoring.

Changes to structure and content

  • Standards 674, 5845, and 23439 have been added to the elective section and the rule amended to reflect the requirement for a minimum of 35 credits.

People working towards version 1 of this qualification may either complete the requirements for that version or transfer their results to version 2. The last date for entry to training programmes or courses for version 1is December 2009.

Version 1 was developed as part of the review of the Solid Wood Processing qualifications in 2007.
