Head Start Mission Statement
The mission of the Alexander County Head Start program is to promote the positive growth and development of children and families in a warm, loving and experience rich environment.
What is Head Start?
Head Start is a federally funded comprehensive community based program serving families with children three to four years old. The program offers center based services to income eligible children that reside in Alexander County.
Services are provided to eligible families at no cost. Services include transportation, medical and dental assistance, mental health and wellness services, and breakfast and lunch.
Head Start Highlights

- 93% average enrollment
- 75% of eligible children enrolled
- 100% had medical exams
- 100% had dental exams
- 100% had hearing screenings
- 100% have a medical and dental home
Head Start offered many opportunities for parents and families to volunteer at Head Start. Families were invited to participate in Policy Council and Parent Committee. Families were given information about Head Start sponsored events such as Dude Day, a Ice Cream Social and end of year celebration at Matheson Park.
Families were also invited to participate in activities sponsored by our community partners which emphasized healthy eating habits, weatherizing a home, school readiness skill building, mental health and wellness, tax prep and job training/college courses offered by ICARE of Statesville.

Welcome New Director
The 2012-2013 began with Alexander County Head Start welcoming a new Director. Macy Jones, a former Alexander County native and former Head Start Director for the program returned to the county in June after living and working in Wake County since May, 2001.Ms. Jones, a former Head Start student worked with Chapel Hill Training Outreach, The NC Division of Child Development, STG International as a Contractor for Region IV Head Start and as private consultant for Head Start and Early Head Start programs across the nation.
Funding Facts
/ Head Start provided $901,626.00 in federal grant funds to serve 128 children.NC Pre K provided $117,000 in state funds to serve 18 children.
Exceptional Children provided $48,000 to serve 16 EC children
Total Funding serving - $1,115,858 serving 162 children

/ Alexander County Head Start uses Creative Curriculum – Teaching Strategies Gold to indicate the appropriate skill level for pre-school children.
