Problems are inevitable to everyone, but grass-root families are the most influential group of them all. Households living around the poverty line face tremendous pressure: on one hand, they need to spend time doing daily chores as well as sending their children to school; on the other hand, they need to earn money during the rest of their day – however, most companies are unable to cater to all their time needs at once, thus, making it harder for the poor to find a job. GoGenie saw the urge of the low-income group to make a living based on their limited time and transportation cost, eventually launched an app that makes their lives easier.

High transportation cost is one of the problems low-income job-seekers face. In light of this, GoGenie provides an online platform that offers convenient screening services for companies as well as that provides a cost-saving interview experience for the poor. Unlike other job-seeking apps, the social innovator offers interview trainings and workshops to equip job-searchers with the required skills during an interview, and work hand in hand with people to prepare digital CVs and record interview videos to ensure they have the essential tools to a job interview.

With an aim to raise the number of success cases, the innovator set its eyes on companies with higher turnover rate such as the catering, retail and packing industries that need quick temporary staff – in this way, it matches with time-constraint families’ needs for a part-time job. Not only did this web-based job-matching platform provide a life-changing chance, but it also reminded people their dreams at their worst: a mum worked part-time at a hotel found through GoGenie, and established a dream nail polish store of her own.

The success of GoGenie didn’t come as easy as it seems – Mary, the co-founder of the platform, like every other startup entrepreneurs – faced many obstacles on the road to their destination. How to raise funding, who to target first, where to find customers are all some of their most distressing problems: but the utmost frustration is despite the hard work and kindness, little had appreciation for her intentions – when the business just started, interviews and workshops could only be taken place at local coffee shops, and for some days, it was only empty chairs to accompany her flaming heart.

Notwithstanding the hardship we may encounter, Mary still wants every young heart that desires to make a change in the society to hold on tight to what we want. “When you fall seven times, stand up eight.” Starting up is difficult in every way, but all we need to do is to acknowledge it, face it, and solve it. Then we will see our problems as stepping stones to success.
