Directions: Make sure your essay meets the following basic requirements.

Does my paper have…

  • A thoughtful, original title?
  • A hook that consists of 3 or more sentences (rhetorical questions, illustration, scenario, historical background, etc.)?
  • A thesis that is one sentence long andaddresses every part of the writing directions?
  • 3 body paragraphs that each have a topic sentence that tells what each paragraph will cover?
  • 3 body paragraphs with text evidence that is fully explained and connected to my thesis?
  • Citations from the text?
  • A Works Cited page formatted correctly with entries that match the parenthetical citations in my paper?
  • Properly styled formatting (MLA)?

If you answer “yes” to all these questions, that’s a good sign.
