TRACK & FIELD 2018

1)Track and Field is a wonderful sport that has been around since the first Olympics. In 2016, you saw the best athletes in the world compete in track and field at the Olympics in Rio de Janiero. You can gain an appreciation for the efforts to these Olympic athletes by being a part of Track & Field here at PHS. There are sprint events for the fast runners, distance events for runners with good endurance, jumping events for the good jumpers and weight events for the strong athletes. It is a great sport to help get you in shape. It is also a sport where you learn much about yourself as you face the challenge of improving your time, distance or height as the season progresses. Additionally, you can help your team do well, as you work hard toward individual excellence.

2)The first day of practice is Monday, March 5. All athletes should meet in the gymnasium at 3:00 PM dressed for practice.

3)Coaching Staff:Tom Armstrong –Throws; Jenni Rathsack—Sprints (100m, 200m, 400 meter relay & 800 meter relay), Long Jump & Triple Jump; Brett Young - Sprints (100m, 200m, 400 meter relay & 800 meter relay), Pole Vault; Glen Smith–Mid-distance (400 & 800 meter runners and 1600 meter & 3200 meter relay);Hurdles; Jay Grosshuesch—Distance (800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 3200 meter run, 3200 meter relay), High Jump, Head Coach

4)Several items need to be completed before you can practice. (A) Each athlete must have a blue card completed by March 5. The office secretaries issue a blue card after the athlete has completed a physical/alternate year card, an insurance card and an athletic code. The blue card is then turned into a coach prior to the start of practice. (B) Show up for practice ready to work hard. Track and Field is a sport in which an athlete can improve greatly with a strong work ethic. If you want to work hard and feel the satisfaction of improvement, than track is for you!! (C) Start working out!! We have a great fitness center in our school. Take advantage of it. Follow the workout plans provided and also linked to the website.

5) We will have a mandatory parent’s meeting on Monday, March 12 at 6:30 PM in the PHS Cafeteria.

6) The first couple of weeks we will likely be working mostly indoors. However, plan on at least part of everyworkout being completed outside. Be sure to have warm clothes to wear when we run outside. You will not be excused if you forgot your warm clothing. Also have lighter clothing for the indoor part of the workout.

7) Meet Participation—

We have numerous, both indoors and outdoors, throughout the season. Most meets allow both varsity and JV participation; so all athletes will get plenty of opportunities to compete. We also have 3-4 “JV only” meets. The bottom line is that a PHS track & field athlete will get many opportunities to compete. There is no bench in this sport!!

8) Clothing Purchase:

By mid February the link for on-line ordering of PHS Track and Field clothing will become active. The closing date will be March 13th.
